Highlights
  • Dam Square - Here we will see two of the most iconic sites in Amsterdam, that every traveler must see. It’s the war memorial on Dam Square, and the Royal Palace right across from it. The square also functions as a place for modern day demonstrations, protests and gatherings which I can tell you all about. Let’s see what they have in store for us on our visit!
  • De Bijenkorf - Our greatest and most luxurious shopping mall. You’ll find all the top brands here at the main level, but the others levels have more to offer. I used to come here with my grandma to have some tea and apple pie.
  • Beurs van Berlage - The first and oldest stock exchange in the world. Originally brought about to sell shares in the East Indies Company, the company that made Amsterdam rich. They were the first to get the idea of selling shares, thus this place is the birthplace of the modern day stock exchange.
  • Red Light District (De Wallen) - The Red Light Distrcit is well known to the outside world. The place is in continues flux and has a different character every decade. Let me tell you latest during our tour, while I guide you through safely.
  • Nieuwmarkt - This is the heart of the city back in the middle-ages. It’s home to the 15th century building known as “The Waag” right now, but it used to be the entrance to the city complete with a draw-bridge.
  • Museum Het Rembrandthuis - Beautiful house, now the Rembrandtmuseum, where Rembrandt lived most of his life. Great place to visit on any occasion, and especially when you’ve perhaps missed an opportunity to get tickets to the big museums.
  • Staalmeestersbrug - One of the most iconic brudges in Amsterdam. I’ve lived her for more than a decade, and when cycling past it I’m always anoyed by the masses of tourists wanting to take a picture there. When I finaly gave my own tours, only then did I understand why people were going there! It’s because the view it offers, contrasting the bridge and canal against the buildings is unmatched.
  • Bloemenmarkt - As a local I never even noticed how special this market was! To us locals it’s normal to just see the market floating on the water, but it’s something special for sure!
  • Begijnhof - This is a little-known place right in the heart of Amsterdam that almost no one knows about! It’s an oasis of calm right in the middle of the busiest city in the Netherlands.
  • Huis met de Kolommen Ambtswoning Burgemeester van Amsterdam - Residence of the mayors of Amsterdam. Currently Femke Halsema lives here.
  • Anne Frank House - This stop does not include entry into the house. If you want tickets for Anne Frank you need to book them far in advance. What I can do is show you the house from the outside.
  • 9 Little Streets (Negen Straatjes) - The 9 streets, or ‘Negen Straatjes’ is one of the primary speciality artisan shopping streets in Amsterdam. You will find things you won’t find anywhere else. If you are a fan of shopping I can take you here!

Additional Information

Join me on a local’s guide through the streets of Amsterdam, where I’ll share with you the essence of this city, insights about life in the Netherlands, and touch upon its rich history. With my guidance, you’ll discover spots that you wouldn’t stumble upon by yourself while also providing you with personalized suggestions.

Most crucially, we’ll delve into the core of what it means to be Dutch, exploring an oddly unique concept we name ‘Gezelligheid’. You might ask, ‘What’s that?’ Simply put, it’s untranslatable. ‘Gezelligheid’ is a feeling that must be lived - and that’s our objective!

Throughout our journey, we’ll take a stroll past the must-see landmarks like Dam Square, the Red Light District, and Rembrandt House, as well as hidden treasures you’d never unearth on your own! And who knows, we might even indulge in some authentic Dutch delicacies like ‘Stroopwafel’ or ‘Bitterballen’ to truly elevate our experience of ‘gezelligheid’ to its extreme.

Best guide for an afternoon walk ! - Jan was a fantastic tour guide. It was a great way to spend an afternoon talking exchanging views and ideas. His knowledge is great. He is extremely personable as well. We started at VanGogh and ended at the Jewish memorial. In between we had fresh Stroop Waffel, a cappacino stop, sampled some cheese, took in the flower market, churches, the red light disctrict and more !!! If you got 3 hours in Amsterdam book Jan you will not be sorry !!

A quick jaunt around Amsterdam centre - Very friendly local guide. He took us to interesting spots including a delicious cheese shop (my request) coffee stop and also the best stroopwaffle cafe (not the one advertised on tik tok! where all the tourists go) called Hans Egstorf. Also saw the holocaust memorial which was very moving. We had been to Anne Franks house and Rembrandt and Van Gogh so missed those out, which gave us more time for other places. We ended up at a restaurant of his recommendation (u can see our theme for the morning here in my review!) All in all a lovely morning stroll through Amsterdam with a really lovely knowledgable guide.

Great tour - Jan expertly navigated me through bustling squares, charming canals, and historical landmarks. We strolled past the iconic Anne Frank House, the Red Light District, and marveled at the architectural beauty of Dam Square and the Royal Palace. But the tour wasn't just about the big names. Jan took me on delightful detours through hidden alleyways, shared local legends, and pointed out hidden gems in the heart of the city. The storytelling was captivating, weaving humor and historical facts into each stop, making even the most mundane details come alive. Jan was also incredibly patient, accommodating and answering my questions thoughtfully. The pace of the tour was perfect, allowing me to fully appreciate each sight without feeling rushed. We enjoyed brief break making the experience even more enjoyable. Overall, this walking tour exceeded my expectations on every level.Jan’s knowledge, and passion for Amsterdam made the city come alive. Whether you're a history buff, a curious first-time visitor, or simply seeking a charming introduction to Amsterdam, I highly recommend booking a tour with this incredible guide. It's an experience you won't forget!

Seeing the many layers of Amsterdam - Arunabha was a delightful guide through the streets and neighborhoods of Amsterdam. It was a nice blend of walking and sitting to keep the back pain from setting in, and the blend of history, culture and daily life experience in Amsterdam kept the tour rich with learning on different levels.
