Gathered from the Port entrance, we embark on a journey trailing the edge of the Cromarty Firth and traverse the Cromarty bridge leading to the Black Isle, en-route to Beauly Priory. This is a 13th century Monastery constructed for a fraternity of Valliscaulian monks hailing from Dijon in France and later ravaged by Cromwell’s soldiers in the 16th Century.
We will pause momentarily to admire some Highland cattle (see image), before we proceed across Culnakirk Hill to Drumnadrochit and explore Urquhart Castle that occupies a limb extending into Loch Ness. The vistas of the Loch from this point are breath-taking, and it’s in this proximity that St Columba is said to have spotted the Loch Ness Monster.
Next, we course towards Inverness, and as we approach Inverness, we circumnavigate Hill of the Fairies. We halt to appreciate the Cathedral and The Old High Church and we elapse Inverness Castle and the figurine of Flora Macdonald. Finally, we set off to Clava Cairns, enjoy a lunch session at Cawdor Castle, and culminate our tour at the historic Culloden Battlefield.
