It rests along the last foothills of the Apuan Alps. This locality bears Roman traces, with parts of the ancient Roman wall still standing. Dating back to medieval times, the town was established in 1255 on the existing ‘Rocca di Sala’ fortress of the Lombards by Luca Guiscardo da Pietrasanta, and hence it bears its name.
