Additional Information

The Obscure Tale of Little Africa in the Port of Rio de Janeiro discusses the four million Africans, who were enforced into slavery to Brazil over the period of 300 years.

Rio, during the 19th century was the largest African slave market in the world. Every fifth modern enslaved individual globally ended up in Rio.

It’s no surprise that currently, a majority of Brazilians identify as black.

With evident traces in samba, carnivals, cuisine, music, and religion, the African culture is deeply embedded in Brazil.

Our Walking Tour focuses on the African diaspora’s influence and its enduring heritage in Brazil.

Further, with our Little Africa Walking Tour, you’ll explore the major points of interest in the Saúde Neighborhood, the central location of all our site visits. Hence, Morro da Conceição, Cais do Valongo, Pedra do Sal, Largo de São Francisco da Prainha, Praça Mauá, Rio Art Museum, street art galleries… all lie within Saúde.

10/10 Experience with Friends and Family - Damiana was a spectacular tour guide. I am SO happy we found her tour. She's extremely knowledgeable and flexible enough to tailor the tour to fit the vibe of the group. We didnt have any other plans for the day so she was able to add some additional stops on the tour. We event went to a nice market after the tour was over! You can tell Damiana loves what she does and the people we meet on the tour have love for her as well. Felt super safe and will absolutely be booking another tour with her next time we're in Brazil. I truly can't say enough great things about her. Thank you 10/10 experience.

Brazil 2024 tour - It was interesting to learn the history of Africans in Brazil. Our guide was knowledgeable and presented information with clarity. I enjoyed the break from the Brazilian sun when we toured the site where they excavated the bodies found during the home renovation.

Culturally Rich Afro-Brazilian History! - This is a must do tour to learn about Brazilian history. Larissa was our tour guide and she was excellent! She had a depth of knowledge and compassion about the African slave trade and how it was integral to Portuguese history and founding of Brazil. She also highlighted some of the current developments in recognizing this history and educating the general public. We toured Vlongo Wharf and walked the area of "Little Africa" pointing out significant highlights. We started the tour at IPN institute/museum which shows some of the archaeological finds of buried slaves and has a good pictoral display. All in all a great tour and be sure to ask for Larissa!

Very Painful but Exemplary Rio Little Africa Tour - I am a world traveler who has been on many tours both in my country ( USA) and around the world and the Rio Little Africa Tour with Ms. Anna Julia ranks among the very best. My tour guide knows her subject matter well and her nuances of information are outstanding and MOST important although very painful to hear. My tour guide is young but I was pleasantly surprised, as she is not only knowledgeable, professional and articulate, but passionate and posed important questions which inspire more research and political action!. My tour guide also added a big dose of culture, with regard to food, music, religion , and local ambience interwoven in a historical context. This four of Rio de Janeiro was exemplary! Request my tour guide by name to ensure an incredible experience.

Definitely an Essential Tour! - Great tour! Damiana was a wealth of information about the historical events of slavery here in Brazil. It was moving to see the original wharf, and hear stories of what transpired here. This is an essential part of history, so anyone who comes to Rio needs to experience this and learn about the history of Brazil’s inhabitants. It definitely is a must-do tour!
