Additional Information

On the Little Africa Tour—African Heritage, we spotlight venues significant to Black history in Rio de Janeiro. This journey locates itself on one of the main routes of the global African Diaspora, serving as part of Unesco’s Slavery Route Project. Much like a tour focusing on the Holocaust, this experience remembers the narrative of Africans and their progeny. This expedition is crucial for promoting black consciousness and combating racism globally while showcasing the value of black culture and history.

The storytelling aspect is both educational and decolonizing in nature. The itinerary features the Valongo Wharf Archaeological Site, a significant hub of the Slave Trade in antiquity, which was awarded a place on the World Heritage List in 2017. The Site encompasses the globally most noteworthy ruins of a docking point for enslaved Africans in the Americas. It’s estimated that South America received approximately 900,000 Africans via Valongo.

This remembrance tour recounts historical narratives, tales of pain and struggles, and despite all odds, the resilience of African Brazilian people. These individuals remade themselves in the diasporic world, influencing civilization’s values, while also cultivating Brazil’s unique national identity. The tour is designed for small groups.

Afro-Brazilian History is a Necessity! - Carolina was EXCEPTIONAL! My wife and I really appreciate how thorough, and knowledgeable she was about the entire Afro-Brazilian experience and heritage. She showed immense passion in presenting the information on culture, neighborhoods, and history…both happy and dark scenarios, to educate us on important information.

Decolonial tour - Decolonial tour about the life of enslaved africans in Rio de Janeiro. Tour included archaelogical sites in old town. Very experienced, well educated guide. Bruna has history degree and she helped us to understand nuances about history of afro-brazilians‘s life nowaddays and in the past.

Fundamental experience for self-knowledge as a nation and person - It was amazing! It's admirable to see the powerful work you do! It was a morning of a lot of learning and, particularly, very touching, especially because it was directly affected by this story! Thank you very much and a special congratulations to the guide who, despite the excessive heat of the day, imparted all possible knowledge in almost 4 hours of tour in a very didactic and structure of both the history and archeology of Little Africa and Brazil. We are very grateful and leave with a warm heart to see that there are many black people studying and being able to tell their own story! ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽

Great tour - We had Val as our guide and he was incredible! He spoke English well enough and taught us a lot about the African Brazilian culture and history. He even took us to a few places that we had missed on a previous tour because they were closed. We really enjoyed this tour and our guide Val. Thanks Val for a great day! I highly recommend!

Unmissable - The Little Africa Tour is a must for anyone who wants to see a side of the city full of history from a different perspective. It was one of those trips that leaves us thinking for days... it leaves the circuit and makes us travel through time and space.
