Highlights
  • Irazu Volcano National Park - The tour will begin by trekking south along the Panamerican Highway to reach Irazú Volcano National Park and the base of the behemoth ‘Iztaru’ (the name of an indigenous village that was situated on the flanks of the volcano, and a likely candidate as a possible origin for the current name of the Irazú Volcano).
  • Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles - Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels - As you descend to the city of Cartago, you will stop at the Virgin of the Angels Basilica ‘ a famous peregrination site for many believers, some of whom travel for days or even weeks on foot, in a pilgrimage of faith, to the site. The basilica has large vaulted ceilings and exquisite examples of stained glass windows.
  • Jardin Botanico Lankester - Next, stop at Lankester Gardens, a University of Costa Rica Center for Investigation that protects more than 800 species of orchids, bromeliads, and countless other species of plants. Continue to the Valley of Orosi, an area that overflows with beauty. After visiting one of the few remaining colonial churches, stop to enjoy a scrumptious typical lunch at one of the local restaurants.

Engrossing and fascinating day - This was well-organized and interesting. Well worth the price. Grebin was a thoughtful, respectful, intelligent guide who also was our driver. We booked the day before and the email reservation response was quick. I sent an inquiry about hotel pickup, as ours wasn’t listed since it was in Alajuela. I received a response and also a follow up asking me to confirm. A link for the pickup location was sent. This was speedy. My husband and I took a taxi the 8 minutes to the pickup location and the guide was waiting. We drove to pick up The only other person on our tour. *Expect to make several pick up stops though and anticipate traffic. Patience is crucial. San Jose metropolitan area is so huge. Grebin told us many interesting historical facts and some anecdotes on the way to the volcano, answering all our questions. He moved between English and Spanish seamless, as our other passenger was from Mexico. We stopped at the main crater and at the lower viewing area and got 30 minutes to walk around. Perfect. Stopped at the basilica and he guided us, then allowed 10 minutes on our own. Met back at souvenir shop to browse and use toilet. We could not walk around inside the nave or up to the altar due to Mass but we did walk in and look around. We had another stop at the Orosi viewpoint and drove down to the ruins. Again we had 10-15 minutes to wander on our own. Grebin asked if we wanted lunch before or after the gardens. We all agreed on lunch and the Casona de Cafetal was peaceful, as we ate on the outdoor patio on the edge of the lake. About an hour. The local Meal was much better than average ! Not fast food. Our final stop at the gardens was amazing as Grebin gave us facts and led us around, also leaving some time for us to wander the orchids and Japanese garden ourselves. Drop off was good. Due to heavy traffic, Grebin called another driver to meet us up drive the other passenger back. Definitely recommend and we hope you get Grebin (Chewbacca)

Trip to the Volcano! - Nice trip, with a very knowledgable guide. Our tour departured at 6:30, going straight to the volcano. Then we've been to the other places, including the Basilica, which was not on the list, but was a nice inclusion.

Good must do activity in San Jose CR - The clouds in the mountains didn’t allow us to enjoy the views of the crater at Irazu, but the Cartago church and the Lankester Botanical gardens were awesome. The scenery to the mountain top was fabulous. The lunch was good too by the lake

Good tour - Very much worth visiting. We had a very knowledgable tour guide, and the lunch was fantastic. Irazu volcano part is quite flat, and we had nearly 1 hour there, do consider visiting! The blue lake as shown in the picture is there after it rains, so don't expect to see it in the dry season.

The Lankester Gardens were beautiful - For first part of trip, the Irazu Volcano was nice view of the crater. The lady of the angels church was very beautiful and appreciated that when asked questions the guide was very informative. The Lankester gardens were really pretty and the place was really well taken care of. The gardens made the trip well worth it. My favorite part was La Ceiba restaurant which was amazing. The food was tasty and presentation was delightful. I would recommend the tour and asking questions if want to get more from tour.

This tour is jam-packed - TOUR GUIDE Our guide was Gravin / Chu cho (I’m not sure if I spelt his name/nickname correctly). Some tours have a guide and a separate driver. Gravin was both and did such an amazing job. He was full of great knowledge and answered all questions. It was also really nice of him to introduce everyone on the bus and where we were from. It’s the little things! IRAZU VOLCANO We drove to the top of the active volcano where we spent about 20/30 minutes taking in the view and taking pictures. Even though it was 10 degrees Celsius, I wasn't really cold (and I was wearing shorts). It was very windy, so bear that in mind if you’re wearing a hat! Note that you won’t see a lake as the water dried up back in 2019 I think. LANKESTER GARDENS This tour around the botanic garden was nice. Again, our guide was so full of knowledge and was telling us about the life cycle of the plants. There was some free time to walk around the Japanese garden at the end. LUNCH This was the last thing on the tour – it was tasty. You get a starter, main and dessert with coffee. The lunch was by a VERY beautiful lake. I definitely recommend walking down and just taking in the serene view and silence. N.B. there were other stops along the way, e.g., a Roman Catholic basilica, the Ujarras lookout site, the ruins of the oldest church in the city. This tour is jam-packed.

Full Day Tour - Irazú Volcano: No views, very cold. Maybe because it was January. Always bring your warmest clothes. Orosi Valley, and Lankester Gardense: Now this was the beauty of the trip; Our guide, Martin, was engaging, humorous and informative. And made the journey. The Los Angeles Basilico is very special and worthwhile place to visit. The hot baths and lunch was a perfect ending of the day.

SCAM DO NOT BUY - DO NOT purchase this trip! I paid online through Tripadvisor as it is a reputable site but it was a total scam. I waited for 2 hours past the departure time for the alleged tour to collect me and no one ever turned up. I tried calling the office number tripadvisor provided and it said the phone was off. I even went to the office in central San Jose to try and get my money back but it was locked and bolted.
