The raw material used to make this ancient paper comes from the stalk of the Cyperus papyrus plant, which has a brittle interior and a tough exterior and grows in damp regions of the Nile Delta. Its method of production was a well-kept secret for many years, allowing the ancient Egyptians to have a monopoly over its production and distribution. The Papyrus Institute is a government-approved museum and shop not far from the Pyramids in Giza, where visitors can browse and buy a huge selection of hand-painted papyrus prints. Prices range from the cheap to the very expensive, but bear in mind that these prints are the authentic article and make for some quality souvenirs.Staff at the Papyrus Institute talk visitors through the entire process of manufacturing papyrus, including a demonstration of exactly how it is made.

Additional Information

The Papyrus Institute takes its name and focus from the significant role papyrus has played in Egyptian history. This primitive form of paper was crafted from the stem of the Cyperus papyrus plant, which grows plentifully in the moist territories of the Nile Delta and boasts a delicate inside and sturdy outside. The technique for creating papyrus was a closely guarded secret, giving the ancient Egyptians exclusive control over its manufacture and distribution.

Situated within a stone’s throw of the Giza Pyramids, the Papyrus Institute enjoys the official approval of the government and doubles as both a museum and marketplace. There, visitors can peruse and purchase a wide variety of hand-rendered papyrus artworks. While the cost of these pieces greatly varies, it’s worth noting the authenticity of the prints and their potential as quality mementos.

Guests of the Papyrus Institute receive a walkthrough of the comprehensive papyrus creation process, complete with a firsthand demonstration of how it’s fabricated.

Ladies Day Out - My friends and I did a shopping trip and lunch tour with Tonsi. As always he provided us with a other great day exploring Egypt. He made sure we were getting good deals on our purchases, attentive to what we wanted/needed, and made sure we weren’t being harassed by people selling things on the street. I have already booked my next tour with To so a d will continue to use his services.
