Highlights
  • Blue Penguins Pukekura - Otago Peninsula’s largest penguin colony, see up to 200 blue penguins arrive home from a day at sea (more seen over summer than winter). In the non-breeding months (March to August) we expect between 20 - 100 penguins each night.

We will offer viator refunds of 70% if we see less than 5 penguins !

The tour starts with an introduction to the human history of this significant headland, occupied by M**ori long before European arrival.
A special “behind the scenes” walk through the penguin reserve prior to the birds returning from sea. An opportunity to understand the nesting habitat and see the restoration work to enhance the environment for penguins and other wildlife. Then just before dusk we move onto our purpose-built platform to marvel at the world’s smallest penguin species returning from sea. Watch penguins waddle past us just a few metres away. One of the closest and best opportunities to see our special wildlife in their natural habitat.

Still, we guarantee you’ll sight penguins each night!! In the non-breeding period, from March to August, it is common to observe 20-50 birds per night, but occasionally, the count could be less than 10. Get an extraordinarily close view of these creatures. Acquire knowledge about the significance of this site to Māori history. Our tour also includes a unique behind-the-scenes peek at the reserve and the penguin’s habitation.

We stand out as the only evening tours for blue penguins that permit photography (flash photography is not allowed).

Amazing night with some special little guys - What an amazing evening on the Otago peninsula viewing the Little Penguins. The entire experience from start to finish was one that my wife and I will not forget. The natural way that these amazing penguins are “protected” which has allowed them to flourish is very special. Spend the time and money to support this tour and help keep these penguins and their colony trending in the right direction.

Little Penguins are a Must! - The penguins were super cute and the tour guides were really engaging and friendly - don't miss out! It was quite windy and a bit chilly when I went, but they have wind guards on the viewing platforms which made it a lot more enjoyable :)

Loved it! - The talk about the penguins and the history of the Peninsula was informative and engaging for all ages. We saw 45 - 50 penguins up close. Lifelong dream ✅️ You can see them coming out of the sea from part of viewing platform then you swap over with other half of group to see them going into their burrows. Loved it and would highly recommend.

A must do in Dunedin! - Amazing evening! Such a clear, close up view of wild penguins - unlike anything I’d experienced before. We received a really engaging talk - giving us a chance to learn more about the reserve and the history of the area. The friendly team were more than happy to answer any questions we had throughout the evening and hot chocolate warmed us up on the chilly May evening!

Recommended - It is quite a drive via a winding road to the very tip where the center is located. Once there your patience will be tested, but it is all worth it. Nice information center with gift shop and top guides. Ultimately saw about 25 penguins that returned. In one word: Awesome!
