Meteora, a site that hosts some of the most prominent and dramatically situated Eastern Orthodox monasteries, is situated on towering natural rock formations and rounded boulders that characterize the local landscape. Originally there were twenty four, now only six remain. It is found near Kalambaka, close to the northwestern boundary of the Thessaly Plain, situated near the Pineios River and Pindus Mountains.
Meteora has earned a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Meanwhile, Thermopylae is a location in Greece known for its ancient narrow sea passage. Its moniker is derived from its thermal sulphur springs also known as ‘the Hot Gates’. In Greek folklore, it is believed to lead to the sprawling gates of Hades.
A major road now bisects the pass, and a contemporary monument paying homage to King Leonidas I of Sparta is positioned on the highway’s eastern side.
Keep in mind that the journey from Athens to Meteora takes around 4 hours.
