On March 2nd, 1887, The Scottish Prince was en route north along the east coastline, embarking on the final leg of its journey from Glasgow to Brisbane. At 11:40pm, the captain left the deck under supervision of the second mate, who was unfamiliar with these waters. Shortly after midnight, the ship struck a sandbar. Despite several efforts to dislodge the ship by other steamers, all proved fruitless. Inclement south-easterly weather conditions worsened over the next few days, causing the ship to list and was consequently deserted. In due course, the decks split open and cargo such as sewing machines, drapes, whiskey, beer, and mineral water were cast ashore. The iron hull’s bow, now pointing landward, broke into three main parts. While the bow and stern remain fairly preserved, the side plates and decks have crumbled down. It now serves as a sanctuary offering food and shelter to various marine species including sponges, corals, oceanic and reef fish, rays, octopuses, and wobbegong sharks.
