Additional Information

A tour of the 12th century Basilica of San Clemente showcases a striking golden mosaic, positioned above the central apse. Saint Clement’s evolution over the ages spans from a private domicile, utilized for covert Christian worship in the first century, to a commanding basilica. The secret of what was buried underneath the Basilica was unveiled in 1860, when flood water guided an Irish Dominican Roman Catholic priest and archaeologist to the layers beneath the basilica’s flooring.

Digging endeavors are presently in motion. In the present day, you’re able to descend to depths of up to 100 feet spread over three tiers. At the initial level, you’ll discover a 4th century Basilica, which was abandoned in the wake of the 12th century Basilica overhead. Further below, you’ll encounter the remnants of an old pagan Mithraic temple. The deepest level harbors the ruins of erstwhile Roman domiciles.

  • Not recommended for guests with mobility issues as the tour itinerary requires climbing and descending steps and well as walking on uneven terrain.

Japanese people challenged - Hi Gina.Thank you very much. We could enjoy San Clemente Underground and Basilica Tour in Rome. We come from Japan. When l knew this tour, l was worried about English tour. But we have a daughter who speaks English , so we decided to changed it. Finally we enjoyed it and we could see the unbelievable things. Someday we want to comeback to Rome. Because we couldn’t see everything.

Best tour guide ever. Money well spent - The tour was excellent. We had an amazing guide, Priscilla. She is outstanding, well above the level of any other guide I have experienced both in Italy and abroad. Extremely knowledgeable and fantastic at explaining even difficult context to all (children included). The tour lasts 90mins and covers the history, the complex architectural structure, the myths, the facts, the paintings, sculptures and decorations. For those who don’t know about San Clemente it is an almost unique chance to observe the layers of Roman history.

DONT book Eco Art Travel for any Tour. - These idiots cancelled my booking just days before arrival. I had only one day in Rome this time and I Chose them. Apparently there were not enough people signed up so they just cancelled. I find this totally unacceptable when you put so much work and research into booking these tours. Disgusting customer service. I would never use them again. Now I am days away from leaving and scrambling to find another tour.
