The Night Lords served as the Police and Judiciary of the Venetian Republic. The prison personnel will lead you through an original Prison Palace, complete with congested cells, a judgment hall, and horrific torture rooms featuring actual torture equipment and implements of justice. Notably, the Night Lords incarcerated Casanova in this very Prison Palace!
The Palace is ‘populated’ by full-scale replicas of the Night Lords, prisoners, magistrates, solicitors, and every character involved in the prison operations. These figures are based off of historical manuscripts.
The Prison Palace is home to one of the earliest penitentiaries in Europe, established around 1500.
You’ll be able to view genuine graffiti left by prisoners, and hear the thrilling story of Casanova’s prison escape: hear the narrative of how he slipped away from the high-security penitentiary!
This experience is only available for small groups, with a cap of 15 visitors per tour.
- On certain dates, most travelers staying outside of Venice who are planning to visit for the day will be required to pay a €5 access fee. For further details (including exemptions) and to learn what days this fee is applicable, please visit: https://cda.ve.it
