Additional Information

The Night Lords served as the Police and Judiciary of the Venetian Republic. The prison personnel will lead you through an original Prison Palace, complete with congested cells, a judgment hall, and horrific torture rooms featuring actual torture equipment and implements of justice. Notably, the Night Lords incarcerated Casanova in this very Prison Palace!

The Palace is ‘populated’ by full-scale replicas of the Night Lords, prisoners, magistrates, solicitors, and every character involved in the prison operations. These figures are based off of historical manuscripts.

The Prison Palace is home to one of the earliest penitentiaries in Europe, established around 1500.

You’ll be able to view genuine graffiti left by prisoners, and hear the thrilling story of Casanova’s prison escape: hear the narrative of how he slipped away from the high-security penitentiary!

This experience is only available for small groups, with a cap of 15 visitors per tour.

  • On certain dates, most travelers staying outside of Venice who are planning to visit for the day will be required to pay a €5 access fee. For further details (including exemptions) and to learn what days this fee is applicable, please visit: https://cda.ve.it

Very Interesting - The guide was fantastic, he knew a lot about the prison and the different tools. He was very friendly and answered any questions we had. It was a very interesting place and makes you think about Venice in the past.

Nice tour of small museum. - This was a nice way to spend an hour. The museum was quite small but we still enjoyed the tour. The guide prompted for questions all tour and answered all but one. We were alone as a group of 4, so no multi lingual issues. For the price, this tour was good. There are some steep stone stairs you will walk. Also the meeting point was a bit unclear. From the square, cross the bridge to your left as you face the water. Then about 30 meters ahead, there is a door into the museum on the left. We showed the girl on the booth our voucher, and she directed us up the stairs to a small booth in the museum. The guide was waiting there.

Insightful representation of the past - Well presented profile of some of the twisted minds of the past displaying the more sadistic nature of the, predominantly, male members of society, possibly not much different to the present day just a different medium. Definitely worth the visit.

Interesting Casanova story - Some interesting facts, but disappointed that all the torture devices were replicas. Was not very long, guided tour was less than 30 minutes.
