Highlights
  • Stone Town - This tour will give you an excellent way of familiarizing yourself with Stone Town’s geography, history, architecture and culture. This fascinating excursion leads you through a maze of narrow streets that boasts more than 2000 limestone buildings, covering an area of 50 hectares and with a population of 18000 living in the suburbs. With its defined and overlapping African, Arab, Indian, Persian and European elements, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

Zanzibar and Stone Town are truly cosmopolitan. After a visit to the Anglican Cathedral (former slave market), House of Wonders (national museum), Palace museum, the Old Fort, Darajani market, Hamamni Baths, Catholic Cathedral, Freddy Mercury house and experiencing the hustle and bustle of the streets, the bazaar full of coffee drinkers and the beautiful doors of Zanzibar, you too will bear witness that Stone Town is a cultural crossroads and that it is worthy of its world heritage title. Also take the time to explore the markets where local people purchase their daily requirements and also a market street full of colourful textiles.

Whether you are interested in history, culture, architecture, renovation work, or just a shopaholic, your guide can adapt your tour to your needs. They will share amusing, but also cruel stories, about the life and culture of the old times in Stone Town and then safely deposit you back where your tour started/ the place you were met.

Great first day introduction to Stone Town with Mohammed - My guide Mohammed was very knowledgeable, both when it comes to history and present day Stone Town. He was very service- minded, and taught me some Swahili along the way. After the tour I asked where I could fix an issue with my local SIM card, and he found someone right away who figured it out for me

Stone Town and Prison Is. Tour with Mussawir - We did the Stone Town tour with Mussawir (+255778743474), who we highly recommend. He is, of course, very knowledgeable but we wanted a shorter tour given it was extremely hot and we had 2 kids in tow. On top of that, he was also very accommodating often taking us to the local joints to try local food like the Zanzibar Mix, or the roof top at Zanzibar Coffee House. We discussed buying spices, which he then proceeded to get from the local shop at the end of the day while we were at dinner rather than from the “touristy” stalls in the market. I highly recommend using him as your tour guide. He had also arranged for the taxi to the hotel pick up and drop off.

I recommend you visit Stone Town with a guide that knows where to take you! Stone town is a jewellery! - We booked a private tour for visiting Stone Town, from our hotel Palumbo Reef Beach and we had a guide and a private car that took us from the hotel on the opposite side of Zanzibar island to visit Stone Town. We payed Prison Island, Stone Town, the Slave Exhibition and the transfer by boat together: 90$ per person. Stone Town is a jewellery of ancient mixed style architecture, that you can find all over the small narrow streets. The city has something like a special vibe. I saw it that way. We visited the local fruit and fish market and tasted their sweet, creamy baby bananas, and smelled spices also visited The Slaves Exhibition monument and Anglican Church together with Freddy Mercury Museum ( which has a 10$ fee for entrance that you have to pay separately from the cost of the tour). Over all I recommend to visit if you have a guide is better!
