Highlights

Cusco - Sacred Valley - Aguas Calientes

Sacred Valley of the Incas - At 08:00 in the morning we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco. Our first stop will be in Pisaq (Pisac). Apart from the archaeological complex, Pisaq is known for its weekly handicraft market where the local vendors demonstrate and sell their art works like clothes and decorative items. After sauntering through the narrow alleys rimmed with stalls, we will take a bus uphill to the archaeological remains, a massive Incan Citadel perched on the top of a hill. After a guided tour of this impressive complex, we will continue with our journey to Urubamba, a charismatic town enveloped by tall Andean peaks. Here, we will stop for lunch. After relishing a local buffet lunch (with vegan options) we will start our journey towards Ollantaytambo. Ollantaytambo was once an administrative centre of the Incas, having mentioned that, the town houses impressive archaeological ruins. After a guided tour of the complex, you will be boarding a tourist train to Aguas Calientes. Once in Aguas Calientes, our representative will meet you at the train station and escort you to your respective hotel.

Machu Picchu - Cusco

Santuario Historico de Machu Picchu - After breakfast, you will be transferred uphill to the entrance of the Incan citadel by tourist bus. The journey would roughly take 30 minutes. Once at the entrance of Machu Picchu our guide will assign you in a group of not more than 15. You will then pass through the check point where you will have to display your entrance ticket which will be verified against your passport details. Once inside, you will have a two hours guided tour. In this tour we will cover prime areas like

  • the main square,
  • the sacred sundial,
  • the circular tower,
  • Temple of the Three Windows,
  • the Royal Quarters and
  • the cemeteries. After the guided tour you will have some free time to walk around. After the tour, at a designated time you will have to take the bus back to the town of Aguas Calientes from where you will be boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo train station. It is the prime source of water for the villages located on its shores.
The inhabitants of these villages have preserved the traditions, customs and lifestyle that they have been practising since the Incan reign. Just at the end of this sacred river nestles a town called Urubamba which forms a major part of the Sacred Valley. Ruben is most knowledgeable guide/photographer and your best friend at the end of the day! - Ruben made it an incredible experience!!! We were a friends group but some of us also had kids with us and Ruben made it an awesome experience for all of us. He incorporated cultural Inca experiences and traditions and made sure we had plenty of stops ascending for everyone to enjoy the walk. Once at the top he turned into our personal photographer knowing the best angels to get the most epic pictures!!! He was very knowledgeable (Has studied 5 years to become a certified Machu Pichu guide) and shared plenty of information about history. At the end of the day Ruben felt like he was one of our friends and he joined us to lunch. Ruben will also take you THE BEST restaurants for lunches. Definitely recommend Gringo Tours and especially Ruben!!!!

Great Experience to Machu Picchu With Juan - Highly recommended tour company in Peru. The only choice for your Machu Picchu adventure, hands down the best tour company and it made this vacation memorable, stress free and left us in awe. If you want to read the longer review, please continue… I wrote to 7 tour companies and I found that not only did Happy Gringo Tours have the best reviews but they were the only company to reply to me immediately. Here is how our trip looked. After a month or so of texting with Jamie from the company, we locked in the dates and the itinerary for this adventure. I had high expectations, as we all do, of Machu Picchu and because of Happy Gringo Tours they were exceeded. We arrived in Cusco in the late afternoon, Jamie came over and explained every detail of the next few dates and handed me every ticket that I needed. (YES they take care of EVERY single ticket you need, from train to bus to the sacred valley to Machu Picchu). The next day we were picked up in a private mini-van/bus (it was myself, my husband and my mother in law), we all had our own row in this comfortable bus. Our tour guide was Juan and let me tell you, I’ve been on a ton of tours and he was the top 2 I’ve ever been with. On the drive to sacred valley he explained not just the sites but the history of Cusco, Ikas and answered every question we had. He did it with intelligence and great humor. So day 1 was sacred valley and a few other sites, followed by a Peruvian Buffet lunch in a beautiful restaurant. Juan then made a phone call to a local restaurant so we could have some of the best guineapig in Peru, he made the reservation and everything. The next day Juan directed us to the travel station and we headed to Machu Picchu, he met us the second we got off the train and we then took the bus up to Machu. The pictures of course due this place no justice. The tour through Machu Picchu was breathtakingly beautiful and it was made better because Juan knew every single detail about every step of the grounds there. It doesn’t hurt that he’s also a kind person, so he knew exactly where we should take the pictures. Our final day there we were picked up at the hotel and drove to Rainbow Mountain but on the way Juan pulled over and we had a great breakfast at the base of a mountain with tea, fruit, bread and everything to fill us up for the hike. We got to Rainbow Mountain and he set up a horse to take my mother in law up and then hiked with us. Once again he took the best pictures and was incredible company. I know this post is long and detailed but I want to stress that the only decision we had to make on this trip was what hotel to choose. Every other detail and hurdle of travel was covered by Happy Gringo Tours. You don’t have to lift a finger to have this once in a lifetime trip. Every idea I had in my head for this trip was exceeded because of this company. I cannot recommend them any higher. Gracias Juan!
