Highlights

Darwin to Renner Springs

Adelaide River - Stop for breakfast at Adelaide River War Cemetery.
The Adelaide River War Cemetery is a sobering reminder of the impact World War II had on this part of Australia.

There are 434 military burials in total and the adjoining Civil Cemetery honors 63 civilians including the nine post office workers who were killed in the 19 February 1942 bombing of Darwin. Also visit the Memorial to the Missing, where 292 service personnel are remembered, who lost their lives in Timor and other northern regions.

There is an informative Information Centre with videos and signs.

We are going to have breakfast organized by Mattia.

Edith Falls - We are going to stop at Edith Falls for a Swim. I would propose Umbrawarra Gorge in the Dry season (a bit quieter and less people). Everything depends on the time of the season. I will update you before the tour, I am always happy to organize attractive alternatives in case the main attractions are officially closed due to weather conditions.

Pine Creek - We are going to stop at the Old Pine Creek train station and at the Pine Creek Lookout over the old mine, now a beautiful artificial lake.

Katherine - Welcome to Katherine, where the outback meets the tropics. We are heading to Katherine Hot Springs.

Take a refreshing dip in Katherine Hot Springs.

These natural thermal springs are situated on the banks of the Katherine River, within the Katherine township, and comprise of a series of clear pools framed by native vegetation.

Once, the main pool was simply an indentation at the edge of the Katherine River, but now the area is a place to relax, enjoy swimming in the pools, the picnic grounds and scenic walking tracks.

Mataranka Thermal Pool - Visit the small pastoral town of Mataranka, made famous by the novel We of the Never Never and renowned for its sandy-bottomed thermal pool. Enjoy Mataranka Bitter Springs.

Set amongst palms and tropical woodlands in Elsey National Park, these spring-fed thermal pools are an ideal place to relax and unwind after a long drive, or while exploring the national park.

There is a short 500m loop walk available at Bitter Springs.

Daly Waters - Despite the tiny population of the settlement, the Daly Waters’ Pub is one of the Territory’s most famous watering holes. One of the oldest buildings in the Northern Territory, built in 1930, the pub is a quirky place clad in corrugated iron and crammed with decades of memorabilia. The Jingili people, the traditional Aboriginal owners of the area, believe the Dreaming tracks of the Emu and the Sun travelled through here on their way to the southern parts of the Northern Territory. In 1862, after two unsuccessful attempts to cross the continent, early explorer John McDougall Stuart finally discovered water in this region. He blazed an ‘S’ in a nearby tree to signify his important find.

Stuart Highway - Renner Springs was named in honour of Dr Frederick Renner, medical officer to the men working on the Overland Telegraph Line, who discovered the springs when he noticed flocks of birds converging in the area. The area is rich in history and the lagoon and spring still support a large range of natural bird life today. We are going to pass the night in one of the motel rooms. A very special experience.

Renner Springs to Alice Springs

Stuart Highway - We are going to visit the Lubra’s Lookout.

Break your journey along the Stuart Highway at Tennant Creek and the Barkly Tablelands, known for its million-acre cattle stations, gold mining heritage, iconic rock formations and strong Aboriginal culture. This vast land of brilliant blue skies, boundless horizons and plains of golden grasses dissects the Territory between Alice Springs and Darwin and is genuine Outback Australia.

Alice Springs - It is our last destination! We are going to have a look of the beautiful outback town over Anzac Hill. If the time allows us, we are going to Simpson Gap or at the Telegraph Station. Drop Off at the hotel. You are welcome to book with us another day tour in Alice, or a 4 days red centre tour.
