Highlights

Tambopata

Filadelfia - DAY 1 Arrival at the airport or bus terminal and transfer to the Hacienda Tambopata office for registration. If you have large luggage, we recommend repacking and taking only the essentials. A 2-hour car ride will take us to the banks of the Tambopata River, where we will board a boat to the “Hacienda Tambopata – Tambopata” Lodge. Upon arrival, we will check into our rooms and have lunch. In the afternoon, we will embark on an introductory walk through the tropical jungle, offering the chance to see animals like amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and fascinating insects in their natural habitat.

Macaw Clay Lick

Tambopata National Reserve - DAY 2 We will wake up at 4:30 AM to head to COLLPA CHUNCHO, a 1.5-hour boat trip, with a camping-style breakfast. Upon arrival at the macaw clay lick, we will witness hundreds of parrots of various species eating clay from the riverbank. We will settle into our chairs to watch one of the world’s most stunning natural bird spectacles. Following the parrots, we will see the three most colorful macaw species in America. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We will then return to our accommodation. After lunch, our boat will take us back to Puerto Maldonado, followed by a 1-hour boat ride to Monte Amazónico Lodge – Lago Sandoval, where we will check into our rooms. In the evening, we will search for white caimans, typically found on sandbanks in the Madre de Dios River, before returning to the lodge for dinner and rest.

Lake Sandoval

Lago Sandoval - DAY 3 After breakfast, we will embark on a 3 km walk through the dense tropical jungle to Lake Sandoval (home to piranhas), one of the largest lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. We will take a rowing boat to observe a variety of birds and monkeys, including shansho, cormorants, jacanas, puma herons, buzzards, cotomonos, friar monkeys, black machíns, pichicos, and sloths. We may even encounter a family of giant otters (nearly two meters long) that are endangered, as well as the largest recorded caimans, over 4 meters long. We will return to the lodge for a typical lunch before heading back to the city and transferring to the original pick-up points.
