Highlights

Start your 4 Day Lake Mburo wildlife, boat, and cultural safari

Lake Mburo National Park - Your adventure begins with a pick-up by a Peak Cruise safari guide who will brief you on the 4-day Lake Mburo wildlife, boat, and cultural safari. You’ll travel to Lake Mburo National Park, passing through small towns along the Kampala-Mbarara road, arriving in time for lunch, a short rest, and an evening game drive. This tour includes a stop at the Equator crossing for photos and experiments to confirm it’s the center of the Earth. Our 3-day Lake Mburo wildlife, boat, and walking safari also includes a visit to Mpambire royal drum makers to see how local drums are crafted from trees and animal hides. Check into your lodge, enjoy lunch, and prepare for a brief late afternoon game drive.

Morning game drive and afternoon boat excursion

Lake Mburo National Park - After breakfast, your driver guide will take you to the park for a game drive or a safari walk, depending on your preference. Lake Mburo National Park has a history of conflict between wildlife and humans, leading to the extinction of major animals like lions. However, improved relations between the government and local communities have allowed for the reintroduction of many animals, including lions (though rarely seen) and giraffes. A game drive in the park will let you see herds of buffaloes, zebras, impalas, birds, and more without extensive driving. Return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation, followed by an evening boat cruise on the lake.

After lunch and a short rest, you’ll head to the lake to meet your captain for a two-hour boat excursion. The Lake Mburo boat cruise offers a chance to see hippos, crocodiles, water birds like the African fish eagle, and the rare African finfoot. Many animals, such as buffaloes and antelopes, gather at the lake to drink, providing a great opportunity to enjoy wildlife, especially marine animals. After the boat cruise, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Visit Rwenjeru community campsite and Igongo cultural village

Igongo Cultural Centre - After breakfast, we’ll drive southwest towards Mbarara town to visit Rwenjeru Community Campsite. At Rwenjeru, the local community, primarily cattle keepers, will welcome you and show you their daily activities, including cattle rearing, watering, and milking. They will share stories about pastoralism and the famous Ankole long-horned cattle. Afterward, you’ll drive to Igongo Cultural Centre, also known as Igongo Cultural Museum, for lunch featuring traditional dishes. Post-lunch, you’ll tour the museum to learn about its ethnographic collections. Return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight stay.

Morning game drive/Safari walk and departure

Lake Mburo National Park - After breakfast, a Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guide will brief you before a safari walk. This activity is perfect for those who want to stretch their legs and view wildlife on foot. Currently, Lake Mburo is the only park where you can do a safari on foot. You’ll have the chance to see the same wildlife as on a game drive, but on foot. Check out of the lodge and drive back to Kampala, with lunch served en route, marking the end of your 4-day wildlife, boat, and cultural safari.

Additional Information

Our 4 Day Lake Mburo wildlife, boat, and cultural safari starts and ends in Kampala. Those in Mbarara can do the same itinerary and our driver guide will instead meet you in Mbarara. Lake Mburo National Park is recovering from the wildlife-human conflicts of the 1970-80s where some important animals like lions were killed to extinction. With efforts of Uganda wildlife Authority to restore Lake Mburo to its former glory, some animals such as lions and giraffes have been restored. This trip is meant for those that would like to combine wildlife viewing, boat excursions, and culture or community visits.
