Baines Baobabs were named after the famous 20th century painter and explorer who painted this unusual group of baobabs during his journey through southern Africa in 1862. The baobabs stand on the edge of a large salt pan that, although dry for most of the year, transforms into a massive sheet of water dotted with water lilies during the rainy season from December to March. During those wet months, water birds abound at the lagoon and create a spectacle of great beauty. Come back to the camp in time for a shower before dinner under the African sky.

Additional Information

You will arrive a day before the safari begins, spend a night in a hotel or lodge in Maun, and then start your safari fresh in the morning the next day. Your safari covers Makgadikgadi National Park and the Okavango Delta. Makgadikgadi National Park lies southeast of the Okavango Delta, surrounded by the Kalahari Desert. The Makgadikgadi Pan is a salt pan situated in the middle of the dry savanna of north-eastern Botswana and is one of the largest salt flats in the world. Very little wildlife exists here during the harsh dry season of strong hot winds and only salt water, but following a rainy season, the pan becomes an important habitat for migrating animals, including wildebeest, one of Africa’s biggest zebra populations, flamingos, and the large predators that prey on them.
