Highlights

Cape Town - Route 62 - Oudtshoorn

Ashton Winery - Early morning pick up from your accommodation in Cape Town CBD or Stellenbosch (usually between 6 to 8am, subject to traffic and your drop-off address.) You can receive your pickup time a day before.

(Travel route today: about 450 km / 6 hours driving)

Start this epic road trip journeying along the ever-changing scenery on your first day’s drive from Cape Town to the Southern Cape. Wind your way through mountain passes and get ready for the Route 62, modelled after famous America’s Route 66, but with a distinctly local flavour and known as the longest wine route in the world. The Route 62 is more than just a leisurely drive – showcasing local culture, food, larger-than-life local characters and world-class wines. Wine lovers will be in their element with a Wine Tasting pit stop to sample some of the local produce about midway to your overnight stop.

Buffelsdrift Game Lodge - Activities - Complete the day with a journey through the landscape of rugged plains and towering cliffs to reach Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world, situated in the semi-desert Klein Karoo. Those seeking a close encounter with Mother Nature can join rangers on an optional Elephant Observation in nature at the Buffelsdrift private game reserve. See these three rescued elephants; Jabari, Malaika and Bulelo, as they roam freely in their natural environment near a natural waterhole. These gentle giants were orphaned when their parents were poached in the north of South Africa. In efforts to keep the family together, they were transferred to Buffelsdrift, bringing their boisterous personalities with them. You are free to take pictures from a distance and can ask the rangers as many questions as you wish.

Oudtshoorn - You’ll spend the evening here at leisure in this countryside town of Oudtshoorn. Your guide can help you book a restaurant or join the backpacker’s group to taste local delights, such as ostrich “sosaties” (kebabs) and “pot brood” (bread cooked on open flames) at this optional ‘braai’ barbecue experience at extra cost. Enjoy a peaceful evening relaxing at your accommodation around a crackling fire or under the vast twinkling starry night sky.

Oudtshoorn - Addo

Cango Ostrich Show Farm - (Travel route today: about 400 km / 5 hours driving)
Wake up in Oudsthoorn, where the ostrich reigns supreme. If you haven’t picked it up from the bird-filled paddocks and farms lining the highway or the colourful feather stalls on the way to town centre, you will from the many show farm signs and the palatial sandstone homesteads that hark back to an era when ostrich feathers were worth more than gold. The Cango Ostrich Show Farm gives you a glimpse into the farming industry, allowing you to observe the world’s biggest bird beak-to-beak and test the toughness of the shells.

The Cango Caves - Head to the mountains to delve deep underground to the magical Cango Caves’ limestone chambers, alive with drip formation stalactites and stalagmites and remnants of Khoikhoi paintings. Opt for the easy-going Heritage Tour to test the cave’s acoustics and gain insights your guide provides into the formation and dripstone evolution. By contrast, the Adventure Tour (if available) allows would-be contortionists to squeeze, twist and wiggle their way through limestone chimneys on a rather more adventurous underground route.

Addo Elephant National Park - Jeffreys Bay

Addo Elephant National Park - (Travel route today: about 300 km / 4 hours driving)

Rise early for the chance to encounter some of Africa’s Big Five at Addo Elephant National Park. Your guide will use local knowledge to pinpoint the whereabouts of the park’s big game animals while deftly navigating the maze of dusty roads in search of some of the Big Five animals.

You’ll experience an included 2 hour game drive in the tour bus. The original elephant section of the park was dedicated to providing a safe haven for the few wild elephants that survived government-sponsored culling in the early 20th century. The lush vegetation provides protection and a rich food source, supporting what is now the most densely populated area of wild elephants on the planet. This finely tuned ecosystem is a sanctuary to over 550 elephants, lions, buffalo, black rhino, spotted hyena, leopard, a variety of antelope and zebra and other species.

Jeffreys Bay - The early morning start means free time in the afternoon and J’Bay’s surf shop village – with its discount outlets – is perfect for shopaholics. But, if you’ve always fancied learning to surf (optional activity at own expense), then this town or the sand slopes beyond it are the places to try surfing or horseback ride on the beach (optional activity at own expense) or just chill out on the beach. You can rent surfboards and wetsuits for an additional fee.

End the day with dinner at the backpackers accommodation or a night out to a local seafood delicacy restaurant, listening to the sounds of the waves lap against the shore.

Tsitsikamma - Knysna - Wilderness

Bloukrans Bridge - After breakfast head to the coastal forest region of the Garden Route.

(Travel route today: about 300 km / 4 hours driving)

Lush green landscapes and adventure go hand in hand on this adrenaline-packed day… from ziplining over gushing river gorges, breathtakingly-beautiful ocean and river views atop Bloukrans Bridge and exploring dense forests along suspension bridges and footpaths in Tsitsikamma National Park - today is all about the “garden” of the Garden Route!

Calling all adrenalin junkies: get ready for the highest Bungy Bridge Jump in the world… 216m! So if you’re feeling daring, why not face your fears and have a go?

Tsitsikamma National Park - For a more relaxed thrill, try the optional Waterfall Ziplining through dramatic scenery and over waterfalls in the nearby Tsitsikamma forest. You’ll complete about five individual slides, zip over three waterfalls and slide down one impressive gorge.

Garden Route (Tsitsikamma, Knysna, Wilderness) National Park - This region is a playground for the outdoors, and for those who’d prefer to keep their feet on solid ground a visit to the lush forests of the Tsitsikamma National Park is sure to provide your essential forest fix. From birding to game spotting and waterfall chasing; your Tsitsikamma to-do list will be absolutely jam-packed. A short but steep walk to Tsitsikamma’s suspension bridge is worth it for the views alone, but the abundant reptile and bird wildlife, secret waterfall and sandy beach is waiting to amaze and delight you along the forest footpaths.

Knysna Heads - As you head along the coastal belt, the paradise-like coastal towns show off and display why this region is a favourite with holiday goers and locals alike. Stop for the obligatory photo op at Knysna Heads, a pair of rocky sandstone cliffs on the edge of the lagoon, to drink in the exquisitely scenic lagoon views surrounded by ancient forests.

Botlierskop or Mossel Bay - N2

Wilderness - (Travel route today: about 500 km / 6 hours driving)
Another exciting morning awaits with a trip passing oasis-like coastal towns along the ocean-lined route hugged by forested national parks.

Botlierskop Private Game Reserve - Venture along the N2 national road as you return to the Cape and stop near a seaside village called Mossel Bay. Choose to do another optional Botlierskop 4x4 Safari drive (if you’ve not seen many animals in the Addo National Park, this gives yet another option to spot most of the Big 5 animals on safari) at this nearby private game reserve.

After ticking off the region’s must-do bucket list items and exploring the best spots of the Garden Route, journey back to the Cape and end with an evening drop-off at your Cape Town or Stellenbosch accommodation at about 8pm to 10pm subject to traffic and your drop-off address.

Unforgettable experience - the best ever! - All I can say is WOW - this trip surpassed my expectations in every way, and the best part of our tour was the incredible and amazing tour guide; Uriel. He was so kind, thoughtful, so knowledgeable and nothing was ever too much for him - a truly wonderful soul. A few key highlights for us: - Accommodation options on the Comfort Package were lovely, our favourites were De Akker and Addo Lodges, one morning we woke up to Springboks outside our room (so cool!) - All of the activities are incredible, especially the elephant sanctuary experience at Addo and the game drive at Botlierskop - The drives are long but they never feel it, plenty of stop offs and opportunities to stretch your legs - the tour bus is super comfortable too. - Our tour guide; Uriel, did a great job of bringing our tour group together - we even had dinners together after the tour ended, it was lovely. And lastly, South Africa - one of the most magical places we have ever visited, I truly cannot recommend it enough.

Great experience and well organised trip! - The tour was a really great experience! Especially for solo travelers I can recommend it, because you not only meet lots of nice people with whom you are in good company during the week, but you also get warmly welcomed to South African culture and life! - A compliment to our tour guide Denver: He just did a great job! All in all I can tell, that the activities you do are thrilling! My personal highlights were the bungee jump and cuddling with the elephants. The price-performance-ratio was good. Due to traffic on the long distance routes it can happen that you fall behind schedule for the next stop or just have less time at some place, as we have had e.g. in Addo or in Jeffreys Bay. Therefore I would recommend to either leave out some activities (e.g. Ostrich farm) or extend the tour to 6-7 days. The safaris were good, however it would have been nice to spend some more time on that. Thanks a lot, I will definitely recommend your tours!

Best tour, best guide MAUDI - this tour is an absolute must do! You will see all the highlights of garden route with everything planned for you to make your trip go seamlessly. Accommodations are stunning and I couldn’t imagine a better way to explore the Garden Route. Our tour guide Maudi was BEYOND AMAZING. You can truly tell he has a passion for working with tourists to ensure they have a trip of a lifetime. He went above and beyond to make sure we were having a great time, from offering additional activity options such as skydiving, to spending an extra hour of his own time driving us through Addo Elephant National Park to make sure we truly saw as many animals as we possibly could. One of the ladies we were traveling with on the tour used to live off of the garden route and Maudi even took extra time to drive past her old house because he knew how special that was to her and how meaningful that was for her. This made her day and it was because of Maudi’s kind heart. Maudi provided us with so much knowledge of South Africa’s history and facts along the garden route while joking around and allowing us to have fun and be ourselves. We were constantly laughing throughout the whole tour. We truly had the most incredible time from start to finish.

Time of my life! - When I booked this tour, I had no idea I was arranging for one of the most amazing experiences of my life. No itinerary could have prepared me for the 5 days I spent on this tour. from stunning views, exciting experiences and of course our wonderful tour guide Uriel, this tour surpassed all expectations and my wildest dreams. It wasn’t just five days in a bus with a few stops along the way. It was meeting new friends, learning about culture and county and staying in beautiful accommodations. Uriel really went the extra mile to give us an exceptional experience. He made sure we were comfortable, got to know each other and as an important part of our group he of course joined us for experiences and breakfasts, lunches and dinners. We could easily tell, that Uriel loves his job and we were so incredibly lucky to have him as our guide!

Great Garden Route Tour with Denver - We experienced a lot in those 5 days! We saw a lot of animals on the safaris and had the possibility to do some cool activities! But the best part for me was our Tourguide Denver who was very funny and always looked after us! He knew a lot about the different regions on the Tour and I learned a lot about South Africa thanks to him! If I could I would immediatly go again on a tour with him. Thank you hotspot and thank you Denver for this amazing tour!

5 beautiful days - I had an excellent 5 days. The backpacker accommodations are very beautiful and there is WIFI available at all of them. Denver was an excellent guide who knows a lot about South Africa and loved to share it with us. Maybe just one little negative point : the prices of the optional activities were higher than planned but they worth it.

5 days of adventure, animals, culture, fun, and educational experiences - My friend and I joined 8 other strangers for the 5-day tour of the Garden Route. 3 solo travelers (2 Germany and 1 USA) and a group of 6 graduate students from Taiwan were fortunate to be on the bus with the South African tour guide TK. He was an exquisite time manager, tour leader, organizer, transportation professional, and educator. 5 of us selected the backpacker accommodations and I think we had the best deal. The backpacker lodgings were top-notch, although a bit rustic. They offered social connections, fire pits, restaurants, bars, and beachfront rooms. We took part in all of the included activities and added a sunrise game drive and elephant walk. Others enjoyed the bungy jumping and zip lining. We enjoyed the day in Jeffrey's Bay with a bit more unscheduled time. The restaurant choices were adequate, although not elegant. Breakfasts were varied but did the job. We had a lot of driving, but with enough stops, a lot of fun, and a grand time of it all. Highly recommend. Just say yes.

Amazing way to experience South Africa. Thank you TK! - After 3 weeks in Simon’s Town, I joined this tour to enjoy the famous Garden Route. Hotspots2c was very responsive and helpful over WhatsApp helping advise on which tour is most suitable for me. I liked how we are a small group of 11 people and you get to meet other solo travelers and groups. The van is comfortable and spacious and you’re able to charge your phone through outlets next to your seats. I chose the backpackers lodge private dorm option. The rooms were nice and clean. We didn’t get to spend much time in our rooms anyway so the private dorms were perfect and cost efficient. The itinerary is activity filled which I really enjoyed. I participated in activities I never thought I would have such as bungee jumping and surfing lessons, which were my highlights. I also really enjoyed the walk with the elephants where we came up close and personal with them. For those who did not participate in the activities, they were able to wake up late or spent extra time at some other locations or they would have to wait at a restaurant, depending on where we were at. Our guide TK was amazing! He is very professional and knowledgeable and will share the history of SA and the different locations as we go along the tour. He’s always willing to help and goes out of his way to accommodate our requests. He is such a safe driver too and we felt safe during our long drives. TK went out of his way when we drove through Addo Elephant park to take us to see the animals even though it wasn’t a game drive. We saw many elephants and lions and it was another highlight. Thank you so much for the amazing experience!
