Highlights

trekking

Mount Kenya National Park - Depart from Nairobi at 0800hrs, driving through agricultural country up to Chogoria town for lunch. After lunch, we take 4×4 and drive up to the edge of the bamboo forest where we start our trekking through the dense bamboo forest for a distance of 10 km to Mt Kenya , the tent

lake ellis

Mount Kenya - After breakfast and sorting of porter loads, we set off up the mountain at a nice and easy pace. A slightly longer walk via Lake Ellis gives scenic views of Mugi, Ithanguni, and the Giants Billiards Table, whilst if we follow the river near road head, upstream for about 3 km, the foreground scenery and flora is particularly beautiful. Lunch on the banks of a stream, then it’s time to cut up the left-hand hillside to our camp at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more “touristy” areas.

trekking

Mount Kenya - Similar early start. Again well off the beaten track to follow a ridge up the mountain for about 3 hours to eventually join the tourist track on the normal Chogoria route at an altitude of about 4,100m. Breath-taking views over the Gorges Valley and back over towards Ithanguni and the Northern Moorlands. Lunch is served at a small stream crossing, before continuing for a further hour to the Mintos Hut area at 4200m and our night’s rest. The afternoon is spent relaxing at camp, though a 10-minute walk to the “Temple” is well worth the effort. This is a 150 meters vertical cliff that gets its name from the position visitors often adopt when peering over the edge – they look as if they are praying.
An early night is recommended as you are attempting the summit the next day. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

trekking

Mount Kenya - Predawn attempt of the summit starts at 0300hrs and you hike for about three hours up to Point Lenana (4985m), the hiker’s summit, arriving there in time to watch the African sunrise. Descend to Shipton camp for breakfast.
After breakfast, begin a 5-hour descent via Mackinder`s valley to the Old Moses camp (3,300m). The descent is gentle and it offers ample time to enjoy fascinating scenery which includes the moorlands before reaching the camp. All meals and overnight at the campsite.

### descending back

Mount Kenya National Park - After breakfast transfer from old Moses to catch transport to Nairobi.

Five Days Mt. Kenya Climbing up from Sirimon Gate and end at Chogoria Gate - I had planned to take this trip immediately after completing some work in Kenya. Overall, the 5-day tour went exceptionally well. Booking the tour was easy, and Edward promptly responded to my questions on WhatsApp, which I appreciated. The public transport on the Matatu to and from Nairobi was a good experience for me, and was a good highlight of the trip - though having served as a Peace Corps volunteer this was a bit nostalgic for me lol My guides, Ken, Temu, and Simon, were wonderful companions throughout the entire hiking journey. They were patient, encouraging, and provided great company. The itinerary for the five days was well-planned, and I especially enjoyed the extra day dedicated to acclimatization. Despite my previous ankle injury from a hike a year ago, which made me overly cautious, Ken was incredibly helpful in guiding my footing and ensuring my well-being. The meals prepared by Temu were fantastic and always rejuvenated me during the trip. He was also genuinely concerned about my well-being, ensuring that I ate enough throughout the journey. Simon was a helpful and enjoyable companion during our short hike on the third day. However, I must note that while traveling during the rainy season is manageable, it might be better to choose the dry season instead. On the fourth night, I experienced rain, and water seeped through the underside of my tent, making for a slightly uncomfortable night. Apart from that, it would be advisable to bring your own water filter (such as a life straw) if you prefer not to rely on water from the mountain streams. Personally, I turned out fine, as clean water was provided and boiled, which was particularly beneficial during the cold nights. Overall, the trip was a success, and I highly recommend it, taking into consideration the minor inconveniences I mentioned, but also would recommend that you and your guide communicate clearly during the whole trip to avoid any issues.

5 days hike to Mt Kenya - My solo hike with Dennsland was an amazing experience. I was alone with the guide, porter and cook which make it unique experience. The 5 days hike was beyond expectation. The landscape, the view and going to the summit. I unfortunately didn't get to see the sunrise due to the weather, but experiencing the summit with the frost was a first time for me. Sam the guide was supportive and encouraging me. The only this missing was the preparation for the altitude sickness and better cloth for the cold.
