Highlights
  • W.E.B. DuBois Center - Dive into the rich history of the Gold Coast, African American heritage, and the transatlantic slave trade.

An open-air theater located just behind the residence, set in a serene environment that helps you understand why the father of Pan-Africanism cherished the tranquility of his final home.

The museum, library, and seminar room house Dr. Du Bois’ personal library and a collection of his works.

  • Makola Market - Discover the famous marketplace established in 1924, a bustling shopping district in the heart of Accra.

Stroll through and engage with the local traders.

  • James Town Lighthouse - Explore the 28-meter (92 ft) lighthouse built in the 1930s, offering a panoramic view of the Jamestown community and the city beyond.
  • National Museum of Ghana - The National Museum of Ghana is a treasure trove of artifacts spanning archaeology, ethnography, and fine art. These items take visitors on a journey from the Stone Age to recent history, providing a tangible link to Africa’s rich and complex heritage.
  • Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park - The Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, also known as the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (KNMP), is the final resting place of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. It honors his remarkable efforts to free Ghana (then the Gold Coast) from colonial rule on March 6, 1957.

Covering approximately 5.3 acres, the mausoleum features a statue of Nkrumah, while the museum is underground, ensuring it doesn’t overshadow the mausoleum. The design principles of rhythm, contrast, and harmony are evident throughout the structure.

The museum showcases the personal belongings and publications of Ghana’s first president, along with photographs documenting his life.

These photos, featuring Dr. Nkrumah with some of the most notable figures of his era, are truly enlightening.

As you browse through the images, you’ll be amazed at how many iconic 20th-century personalities are seen shaking hands with the founder of modern Ghana.

He is pictured with renowned individuals such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, Nikita Khrushchev, John F. Kennedy, Sir Alec Douglas-Home, Queen Elizabeth II, Harold Macmillan, Pope Pius XII, President Nasser of Egypt, and numerous leaders from countries like Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Niger, Nigeria, and many more.

Dr. Nkrumah’s body rests beneath a catafalque at the park’s center. Symbols reflecting Ghana’s culture and history illustrate his vision of promoting the African identity. A full bronze statue of Dr. Nkrumah, clad in traditional attire, stands at the exact spot where he declared Ghana’s independence.

As you approach the main path leading to the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, you’ll notice fountains on either side. Each fountain features seven bare-chested, squatting statuettes of flute players, seemingly welcoming world leaders and other dignitaries.

The mausoleum’s design, symbolizing inverted swords, represents peace. It can also be seen as an uprooted tree, signifying Dr. Nkrumah’s unfinished mission to fully unite Africa.
