Highlights
  • Cape Coast Castle - The Cape Coast Castle, constructed by Europeans in 1652, is the smallest and the only castle specifically built for the slave trade. Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, it plays a significant role in commemorating the history of slavery. During the first Pan African Festival in 1998, the remains of two slaves from Jamaica and Barbados were brought back to Ghana through the door of no return, now symbolically renamed the door of return. This act was a gesture of welcome to their descendants, signifying their freedom to return to their ancestral roots. The site is crucial in preserving African history and narrating the African perspective on slavery.
  • Elmina Castle - Built by Europeans in 1482, Elmina Castle is the oldest and largest castle south of the Sahara. Initially established as a trade post with warehouses for goods, these warehouses were later converted into dungeons for male and female slaves, who were held for up to three months before being shipped to the “new world.” Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Elmina Castle has served various purposes over the years, including as a prison and a secondary school. Today, it stands as a historical site that connects visitors to their heritage and roots.
  • Kakum National Park - A visit to Kakum National Park, the second largest national park in Ghana, offers a chance to see a variety of nocturnal animals, reptiles, and birds. The main attraction is a 15-minute walk to the canopy walkway, built in 1994 by two Canadians and six Ghanaians. Suspended 40-50 meters high and stretching about 350 meters, the walkway provides an aerial view of the forest. Safety is ensured as three of the original builders still maintain the walkway. This tour is ideal for those looking to overcome their fear of heights.

Good tour, highly recommend. - Gian was the personification of calm under pressure. On our way to the National Park he luckily noticed a sound coming from the engine. Upon inspection he found a frayed fan belt. He tracked down a couple mechanics, located a new belt and we were able to finish the tour albeit a bit late. A long day for Gian!

This tour is a perfect... - This tour is a perfect mixture of nature and history. The visit to the Kakum National Park and its elevated walkways was very memorable. The visits to the slave forts presented the history of the slave trade, the sheer scale of the enterprise and also the inhuman conditions on which the slaves were held before transportation to the Americas. I noticed that in many of the prison areas and particularly at points of embarkation, many visitors from the US had left floral tributes to their ancestors. Suwaiba and Ernst were great guides

Seeing the horror that... - Seeing the horror that our ancestors had to endure. I hope this will never happen to any group of people again.

Day trip to Cape Coast - I was a bit nervous about prep and logistics leading up to my first tour in Ghana, but received a very detailed message from Rashida at ProTour Africa the afternoon prior. Our guide Gian was very knowledgeable, accommodating, and went above and beyond with additional recommendations for the remainder of our visit. Such an impactful day touring the 2 castles, followed by delicious and authentic lunch and fantastic hike at Kakum. A wonderful experience I would highly recommend!

Ghana 2023 - I really enjoyed my tour. Gian drove me to all the locations and it was a smooth and easy ride there and back. Each stop I learned so much and my tours weren’t rushed.

Cape Coast day trip from Accra - I really enjoyed my day trip with ProTour Africa. I thought the tour was well organised, for example we started at the Kakum National park which enabled us to miss the busy afternoon rush and saved the "heaviest" part of the tour- the Cape Coast Castle- for right at the end. Additionally, the driver and host were really friendly and had a comfortable drive even though the roads and traffic in Ghana can be quiet stressful. I highly recommend this tour operator. Thank you so much guys for a great trip!

Great way to see more of Ghana! - Great tour! Understandably a long day with the driving but a nice way to see more of Ghana if you only have a few days and you’re based in Accra. Really enjoyed the castle tours as well as lunch and the canopy walk at Kakum. One concern was that our group joined other groups at each of the castles for the tours, and due to how timing worked out we joined both late and missed the intros. Other than that, a great experience!

Solid but make sure it’s the right tour - Our driver Nana and our tour guide Suema were fantastic, they get five stars. My only complaint is that on the site when booking the tour, it seems the reviews for several different tours were all together and I ended up not getting what I thought I signed up for. So just a word of caution to others, the tour to go to Slave River and the tour to see Kakum park are different. Make sure you sign up for the correct one. Also, the short hike to get to the canopy walk in Kakum park was more strenuous than we thought it would be!

All day long experience - This experience was definitely in our list during the visit. My husband and I rode with groups from other properties. We didn’t get started til maybe two hours after scheduled departure bc people were not ready. The journey was long but the castles were overwhelming to experience. The favorite parts for me were the bridge walk! It felt free to be up there and a good break from the heavy morning of cape coast. Food took a while to prepare and they ran out of a lot of items so we were scrambling to find something to eat. What took away from experience: 1. People not ready on time pushed the schedule back for everyone. This made late arrivals for everything that was scheduled. 2. Because they put so many people in one group, it took away from the experience and tours at the castles. 3. The road is not a smooth pathway driving there and back. The driver did not take those bumps into consideration and it made the ride uncomfortable. 4. Didn’t make it back till 11 pm and was scheduled for 6:30 am pick up. 5. Took us 2 hours for everyone to get their food, took up more time. But how often are you in Ghana to take advantage of these moments !? Just make sure you’re with a group who is looking for you to receive a good experience.
