Highlights
  • Holy Trinity Monastery (Agia Triada) - The Monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) or Tzagarolon Monastery, is one of the most impressive monasteries in Crete. It has greatly contributed to the history of the island. The Monastery is located close to Chania on the Akrotiri Peninsula. It was built by the brothers Ieremias and Lavrentios Tsagaroloi (1632). The brothers, who came from a great Venetian-Cretan family, had a powerful influence on the Orthodox population and the Catholic Venetians. The Monastery of Agia Triada is not only very important, but also extremely beautiful. Ever since it was built it has farmed organic olive trees and vineyards producing fine wine and organic extra virgin olive oil. It also produces traditional tsikoudia, pure thyme honey and unique balsamic vinegars scented with thyme honey or fresh orange.
  • Stavros Beach - Stavros beach is located 17 km east of Chania on the Akrotiri peninsula. In the area there is a big steep mountain in the shape of a camel, standing opposite the port of the village. The mountain has become popular from the scenes of the 1964 film “Zorbas the Greek“, where Anthony Quinn danced the famous sirtaki!
Today, Stavros beach has been developed from a small fishing village into a tourist resort. The main beach is located east of the village, at the foot of the mountain and next to the picturesque harbor of the village. It is formed within a circular bay completely isolated from winds. The contrast of the wild landscape of the mountain with the beautiful quiet beach makes Stavros beach a unique place for swimming.
  • Venizelos Graves - Venizelos Graves, the graves of Eleftherios and his son Sofoklis Venizelos, are at an excellent historic location on the Akrotiri peninsula just 5 km east from the city of Chania. Eleftherios Venizelos was a very charismatic Greek politician and seven times Prime Minister of Greece. The spot for the tombs was suggested by Eleftherios Venizelos himself, as it is located a few miles from his home in Chalepa.
Just a few meters away from the graves are the historic Venetian church of Prophet Elias. Also, the statue of the Cretan hero Spiros Kagialedakis or Kagiales. During the Cretan revolution of 1897, Venizelos and a group of rebels had raised there a Greek flag. The Ottoman forces had requested help from the Great Powers (Russia, Italy, Britain), who did not want the autonomy of Crete. Their fleet bombarded the positions, where the Greek flag waived. The bullets hit the flagpole and threw down the flag, which was raised up again immediately by Kagiales, making his body a flagpole.
