Additional Information

Experience the magnificent Alba Iulia Citadel through our top-rated tour and cap it off with a vineyard expedition and wine sampling at the citadel’s underground wine storage facility: Vinoteca Hugo.

The bastion fortification of Alba Iulia is the most expansive fortress in Romania, a historical marvel that has endured for well over 300 years. It offers a jump back through two thousand years of history, allowing you to wander amid remnants of three different fortifications, each hailing from a distinct era. Each successive fortress enveloped its predecessor: the Roman castrum was overlaid by the medieval fortress, which was in turn encompassed by the Alba Carolina Citadel.

The Citadel’s subterranean labyrinth, known as the Catacombs, has harbored a unique wine cellar for over seven decades, housing a collection of over 5,000 wine bottle cultivated from 1952-1972. Access to this cellar was heavily regulated for several decades. However, following a renovation in 2018, the cellar opened its doors to the public. Tour this incredible wine bank and sample fine wines from a collection housing over 12,000 highly-rated wine bottles.

Hugo should be officially a point of interest in Alba. - A little hidden gem in the heart of Alba Iulia is this Vinoteca Hugo. Was well worthy to try their amazing food, wine and the tour and the restaurant was just amazing, sophisticated and welcoming. I can’t wait to come back again. Thank you for being here to offer us, the community such an eye opening experience.
