Highlights
  • Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa - The mysterious Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa in Alexandria were discovered a little more than a hundred years ago when a donkey disappeared into a hole in the earth. What was uncovered was a complex of 3 story underground catacomb. While the upper floor is pretty bare from design the middle floor has a unique tomb that combines Egyptian, Greek, and Roman iconography.
  • Pompey’s Pillar - A massive 30m column looms over the debris of the glorious ancient settlement of Rhakotis, the original township from which Alexandria grew. Known as Pompey’s Pillar, for centuries the column, hewn from red Aswan granite, has been one of the city’s prime sights: a single, tapered shaft, 2.7m at its base and capped by a fine Corinthian capital. The column rises out of the sparse ruins of the Temple of Serapeum, a magnificent structure that stood here in ancient times.
  • Fort Qaitbey - It’s a 15th century Islamic fortress built to protect the city from invading Crusaders. The Qaitbay Citadel is located on the northeast part of Pharos Island, on the exact spot that was once home to the famous lighthouse of Alexandra. The Citadel was original established by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa’it Bay in 1544 as a fortress..
  • Bibliotheca Alexandrina - The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, also known as the New Library of Alexandria is located very close to where the original Royal Library of Alexandria once stood before being totally destroyed. The new library is without question a fitting tribute to what was once the world’s most valuable library.

Visit to Alexandria - Our trip to Alexandria was cool, the catacombs are interesting, the library left me speechless, it is huge, beautiful and modern. Our guide Mustafa was wonderful, polite and fun, he took us to lunch at a fresh fish market, delicious food at a good price. Driver Ahmed was very kind and friendly.

An Alexandrian experience - The dynamic duo, Mustafa and Mustafa, picked us up on time at our hotel in a nice and clean van. They continually and courteously opened our doors, provided cold drinks and started our Alexandria adventure. First stop was the Catacombs of Kim el Shuqafa where we descended into the cavernous grave sites of unknown occupants. Mustafa eloquently delivered the rich history of this sacred place in such a way that even our teenaged daughter was invested in the story. Providing us the translations for the scripture on the walls of the tombs was invaluable and added so much color to the experience. Mustafa continued this valuable lecture throughout all of the amazing sites. My favorite was the Auditoria. This one and only archeological site provides a deep look into how the Egyptian ways influenced the Romans. Having spent time in Athens and Rome, this spot completed a circle of understanding for me. The whole family enjoyed this tour and we would HIGHLY recommend this wonderful team to anyone looking to experience Alexandria and the surrounding areas. We will definitely come again!

Outstanding Reviews Were Totally Deserved! - Just a few weeks ago, I was wondering what I should do with an extra day in Cairo. When I decided to spend it in Alexandria, I saw glowing reports of the guide Mustafa, emphasizing his knowledge and friendliness . So I decided to go with him—and boy, am I glad I did! He was just as good as his reviews said he would be—knowledgeable and friendly, but also quite flexible, allowing me to go at my own pace, making sure I was getting what I wanted out of the experience. In fact, the tour started a couple days early, when he reached out to me to touch base and see if I had any questions. For anyone else trying to figure out who to trust as your guide while you’re in Egypt, I highly recommend Mustafa!

Awesome Alexandria! - Every stop on the itinerary was more impressive than I expected! Catacombs and Pompey’s Pillar both had numerous other cool “open air” artifacts that added historical context. The Citadel and Alexandria coast were beautiful, and library of Alexandria was stunning. My guide Mustafa was great fun and a wealth of information. Strongly recommended!
