A very different ambiance from Cairo. - Alexandria was very interesting, much different than Cairo. The Roman catacombs were labyrinthine and deep. The site of the ancient wonder of the world, the Alexandria Lighthouse, was a lovely destination for primarily local touriss which gave it a different ambiance from the usual foreign-based tourist sites, which can be annoying. I was deeply dismayed by not being allowed to enter the new Library of Alexandria. That had been one of my main goals in going to the city, but the police were blocking the doorway and wouldn't let anyone pass. I don't know why but it was very disappointing. Other than that and the literally thousands of high-rise apartments that dominated the landscape, the trip was both pleasurable and informative. I learned a lot.
