Highlights
  • Singel - The Singel is a canal in Amsterdam that encircled the city during the Middle Ages. It functioned as a moat until 1585, when Amsterdam expanded beyond it. The canal stretches from the IJ bay near Central Station to Muntplein square, where it joins the Amstel river. Today, it is the innermost canal in Amsterdam’s semicircular ring of canals.
  • Canal Tours Amsterdam - Touring Amsterdam by boat reveals over one hundred kilometers of canals, around 90 islands, and 1,500 bridges. The three main canals—Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht—were dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age and form concentric belts around the city, known as the Grachtengordel. These canals are lined with 1,550 monumental buildings. The 17th-century canal ring area, including Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht, and Jordaan, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, earning Amsterdam the nickname “Venice of the North.”
  • Skinny Bridge - The Magere Brug (English: Skinny Bridge) is a bridge over the Amstel river in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It connects the riverbanks at Kerkstraat, between Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht.
  • Anne Frank House - The Anne Frank House (Dutch: Anne Frank Huis) is a museum and former residence dedicated to Jewish wartime diarist Anne Frank. It is located on the Prinsengracht canal, near the Westerkerk, in central Amsterdam.
  • Het Scheepvaartmuseum | The National Maritime Museum - This museum is dedicated to maritime history and houses numerous artifacts related to shipping and sailing. The collection includes paintings, scale models, weapons, and world maps. The paintings feature Dutch naval officers like Michiel de Ruyter and depict historical sea battles. The map collection includes works by 17th-century cartographers Willem Blaeu and his son Joan Blaeu. The museum also holds a surviving copy of the first edition of Maximilianus Transylvanus’ “De Moluccis Insulis,” the first work to describe Ferdinand Magellan’s voyage around the world.

  • Houseboat Museum - A houseboat is a boat designed or modified to be used primarily as a home. Unlike boathouses, which are sheds for storing boats, houseboats are often moored and stationary, tethered to land for utilities. However, many houseboats can operate under their own power. In Western countries, houseboats are either privately owned or rented out to holiday-goers. In some European canals, such as those in Amsterdam, London, and Paris, people live in houseboats year-round.

Quiet in Amsterdam - The check in process was seamless and the staff were friendly and accommodating. Plenty of free drinks and the pizza was tasty. I gave only 3 stars as we were expecting more narration of Amsterdam history or canal trivia.

Disappointment - I arrived at the designated time and the cruise operator told me they are no longer doing pizza/dinner cruises on Sundays. No one had communicated this to me. They said they would refund my money, and allowed me to ride on a standard cruise for free. The only issue is a) the standard cruise was not open aired as the pizza/dinner cruise was supposed to be so the pictures I took through scratched plastic look like crap; b) there were young screaming kids on the cruise and c) there was no dinner. Other than that it was fantastic.
