Highlights
  • Moco Museum Amsterdam - The Moco Museum is situated in Villa Alsberg, right in the heart of Amsterdam’s Museumplein. This townhouse, designed in 1904 by Eduard Cuypers, cousin of the famous Pierre Cuypers who designed the Rijksmuseum across the square, was restyled by Studio Piet Boon.

Enjoy the following exhibitions currently on display at the Moco Museum:

Banksy: Laugh Now

On the ground floor, you can explore the extensive Banksy “Laugh Now” exhibition, featuring around 50 original works by the legendary street artist Banksy. This marks the first time a Banksy exhibition is being held in a museum.

The Moco Museum showcases all his renowned pieces such as Laugh Now, Barcode, Girl with Balloon, Kids on Guns, Pulp Fiction, Flower Thrower, Monkey Queen, Kate Moss, Bomb Hugger, Soup Can, and many more. The centerpiece of this exhibition is the painting “Beanfield,” measuring 2.5 x 3.5 meters, which has not been displayed since 2009. This significant canvas highlights Banksy as an activist artist. Banksy is famous for his outdoor art, with pieces scattered worldwide. In London, you can even purchase maps indicating the locations of his protected street art. However, not everyone is aware that Banksy also creates indoor art, including original and unique works on canvas, wood, and paper.

ICY & SOT: A Moment of Clarity

The young Iranian brothers Icy (34) and Sot (29) are often referred to as the ‘Banksy of Iran.’ In their homeland, their work is not only controversial but also banned. Despite this, their street art reflects the current Iranian society, offering a unique perspective on themes such as oppression, fame, freedom, war, and dreams. Their talent did not go unnoticed, and they soon left the streets of Tabriz for New York.

Admiration for their work grew even more in New York City. Although success seemed guaranteed, it came with sacrifices: embracing their success in America meant they could no longer return to their native country.

It is now evident that Icy and Sot’s decision to leave their homeland was not in vain. The duo currently holds several exhibitions in New York and is striving for international success. Recently, on February 6, 2018, they sparked discussion with a playful act on Wall Street by placing a gigantic crumpled dollar bill in the heart of New York’s financial district, challenging greed and the instability of capitalism.

awesome - I like the museum concept, showing contemporary artists having a critical view about our life and society. The Robbie Williams section was the most inspiring experience for me with themes around mental health.

Bright and modern - I really enjoyed seeing the art of Banksy and the other artists on exhibit. I was able to follow the thread that wrote them together and I learned a lot while enjoying myself. The basement experience was an experiential treat.

Good art. Too many visitors. - The art was great. The garden was great as well. If you need to go to the toilet there is a lot of them. Everywhere. Kinda special. The only thing I didn't like was the amount of visitors. Moco museum should definitely reduce the amount of visitors at the same time. Main reason for 3/5

Worth it but crowded - I enjoyed the visit and the work of Robbie Williams. I also saw the other rooms (again). I ordered my tickets online and booked a specific time slot. It was crowded and that affects the experience. I did visit it on a Saturday lunch time so that could also explain the crowd. Still it would be a better experience to be able to watch it at your own pace without having to line up to get a closer look at the pieces. Overal i had good time.

Disappointing - Totally disappointed. Way too overcrowded, with a poor layout. Having art on staircases with people taking selfies was bizarre. No staff around so people literally touching the art and being generally so obnoxious. They need to do more to control the crowds. Compared to galleries in London it was like a free for all. Art is okay. I think they overhype some of their collections. But maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I didn’t have 30 people at each painting trying to get one for the gram.

Don’t waste your time. Go to Stedelijk instead - This is a vanity museum. Not sure who curated the work but not originals - mostly copies or one of series. There are much better museums in which to spend time.

Not worth the Money - It's a shallow experience even if the buliding is nice.. It's overcrowded by people taking selfies in front of artworks, which by the way are not fantasticly curated. If you're an art lover, skip it. If you're 16 and willing to pay a lot for some Instagram footage, go for it.
