- Moco Museum Amsterdam - The Moco Museum is situated in Villa Alsberg, right in the heart of Amsterdam’s Museumplein. This townhouse, designed in 1904 by Eduard Cuypers, cousin of the famous Pierre Cuypers who designed the Rijksmuseum across the square, was restyled by Studio Piet Boon.
Enjoy the following exhibitions currently on display at the Moco Museum:
Banksy: Laugh Now
On the ground floor, you can explore the extensive Banksy “Laugh Now” exhibition, featuring around 50 original works by the legendary street artist Banksy. This marks the first time a Banksy exhibition is being held in a museum.
The Moco Museum showcases all his renowned pieces such as Laugh Now, Barcode, Girl with Balloon, Kids on Guns, Pulp Fiction, Flower Thrower, Monkey Queen, Kate Moss, Bomb Hugger, Soup Can, and many more. The centerpiece of this exhibition is the painting “Beanfield,” measuring 2.5 x 3.5 meters, which has not been displayed since 2009. This significant canvas highlights Banksy as an activist artist. Banksy is famous for his outdoor art, with pieces scattered worldwide. In London, you can even purchase maps indicating the locations of his protected street art. However, not everyone is aware that Banksy also creates indoor art, including original and unique works on canvas, wood, and paper.
ICY & SOT: A Moment of Clarity
The young Iranian brothers Icy (34) and Sot (29) are often referred to as the ‘Banksy of Iran.’ In their homeland, their work is not only controversial but also banned. Despite this, their street art reflects the current Iranian society, offering a unique perspective on themes such as oppression, fame, freedom, war, and dreams. Their talent did not go unnoticed, and they soon left the streets of Tabriz for New York.
Admiration for their work grew even more in New York City. Although success seemed guaranteed, it came with sacrifices: embracing their success in America meant they could no longer return to their native country.
It is now evident that Icy and Sot’s decision to leave their homeland was not in vain. The duo currently holds several exhibitions in New York and is striving for international success. Recently, on February 6, 2018, they sparked discussion with a playful act on Wall Street by placing a gigantic crumpled dollar bill in the heart of New York’s financial district, challenging greed and the instability of capitalism.
