Highlights
  • Andong Hahoe Folk Village - Tourist can walk and feel real old traditional village where still remain an old culture and traditional Korean houses.

This delightful traditional riverside village – a Unesco World Heritage site – is a place to commune with the traditional fabric of old Korea and, in the busy months, with large crowds of visitors. Avoid the weekends, go off-season and be rewarded with a glimpse of bucolic enchantment and the gentle rhythms of countryside village life.

  • Buyongdae - Buyongdae is a cliff about 64 meters high situated where the Taebaeksan Mountain Range ends. From the summit, one can get a bird’s-eye-view of Hahoe Village in Andong. The name was taken from an ancient history of China. Meaning lotus, the name Buyongdae is said to be given for Hahoe Village’s configuration like a lotus flower. Thus, one can get the best view of the village from the cliff. Located near Buyongdae are Ogyeonjeongsa House, Gyeomamjeongsa House, and Hwacheon Seowon Academy.
  • Hahoe Mask Museum - Hahoe Mask Museum is located in Andong Hahoe Village, which is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Important Folklore Material No. 122. Hahoe Village is a representative traditional Korean folk town and is the home of the Hahoe Mask (National Treasure No. 121) and the Byeolsin Gut Mask Dance (Important Intangible Cultural Properties No. 69). The museum not only displays Hahoe masks, but also other traditional masks from all over the world.

The museum consists of five permanant exhibition halls and one special exhibition hall, housing a wide range of masks from all over the world along with Hahoe masks. The museum also offers activity programs such as wearing a mask, mask trick art, photo zone, and more.

  • Byeongsan Seowon - Byeongsanseowon is a Confucian school that was established by esteemed Confucian scholars to pay tribute to the memory of Seong-nyong Yu (1542-1607), who was well-respected for his writings and personality. His mortuary tablet is enshrined at this school. Around the time of 1863, Confucian schools enjoyed many freedoms under the Joseon rule, students and scholars of the school were exempt from taxation and other expenses. Byeongsan Seowon was one of 47 places in all of Korea and 2 in Andong not destroyed during the rule of Daewongun [Politician of Joseon Imperial family, 1820 ~ 1898] in 1868.

The Nakdong-gang River is situated just in front of the Confucian Academy. Cross the river and the Byeongsan Mountain can be found. By forming a folding screen like shape around the academy, the mountains both protect and add a serene beauty to the area.

Just Awesome - Despite being a long drive from Seoul, Mr Kim maximized the best parts of the trip. We viewed Andong Village from a high cliff and enjoyed the topography of the entire UNESCO site. We loved the restaurant he took us to and ate like Koreans. Visiting the village enhanced our appreciation for Korean History. He introduced us to a visiting renounced Korean Scholar who has lineage to the families of Village and heard more stories of this historic site. Mr. Kim pointed out the tree planted by Queen Elizabeth II. We visited an old school house that had beautiful views. This would have been a distraction for me if I were a student. Mr. Kim catered to our love of history. This tour is a must to visit. Thank you Mr. Kim for taking good care of us during the trip.

Wonderful day despite the rain! - We had a full and fulfilling day with BJ. Everything ran like clockwork from the hotel pick-up to our early evening return. It is a long drive to Hahoe Village from Seoul, 3 - 3.5 hours with heavy traffic, but it was easy to relax and enjoy the incredible scenery. BJ is a great conversationalist, sharing information on Korean history and personal anecdotes that made the time fly. We appreciated that he understood our preference for a lighter lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the local place he took us to. I truly felt privileged to have been a patron when I learned that the restaurant sees few Americans. The stops - cliff overlook, Confucian Academy, Village, and Mask Museum met all expectations. Fascinating peek into Korean life as it was and still is in this living historical village. This was an area I had researched as a DIY venture, but the logistics on public transport were more than I wanted to undertake. The tour was perfect - all transport was personalized and BJ’s excellent guiding provided so much more than we could have experienced on our own. I highly recommend Outdoors Korea for tours to Hahoe - and ask for BJ!!

Best day in Korea - We got to experience Andong Hahoe village with our driver BJ. This was our favorite day in Korea and we got to learn so much about Korea. BJ did a great job explaining the cultural significance of the village and showing us where to get the best traditional food. We also learned a lot about BJ and he was a patient driver with such a long day. If you are looking to experience old Korea we strongly suggest this. We have a whole new respect for the country and their heritage after spending the day with BJ. We went on a weekday and this was helpful as crowds were very minimal.

Knowledgeable and kind to my family of elderly parents and young high school daughter - Kim is very wise and did a fantastic job. I requested a private tour because I have elderly Korean parents who I wanted to bring back to their homeland. I am Korean American don't speak Korean well and I brought my fifteen year old daughter. Kim kept the tour very interesting and he has so much experience working with people from all over the world. I so appreciate all that he did for us! Andong is very beautiful and well worth the trip!
