Highlights
  • Monasterio de Santa Catalina - The Viceroy Francisco Toledo, during his visit to Arequipa, was informed by the Cabildo, about his desire years ago, to found a monastery of nuns. This motivated him to grant the necessary licenses for the foundation of the “Monastery of Private Nuns of the Order of Santa Catalina de Siena”.

Years later, Doña María de Guzmán, widow of Diego Hernández de Mendoza, beautiful, rich and young woman who had no children, decided to seclude herself in the monastery under construction, giving her all her possessions. On September 10, 1579, the Report and Capitulation of the Monastery’s foundation signed between the City Council, Justice and Regiment and the Bishopric of Cusco was made, and the Town Council handed over the four lots owned by the city for its operation; naming Doña María de Guzmán “first town-dweller and prioress of said Monastery”.

Unmissable - If you go to Arequipa do not stop going to the Monastery. In my opinion it is the most beautiful place to visit. Guided tours are very interesting, they tell you the history and lifestyle of cloistered nuns. It'll take you about two hours. You can take some amazing pictures in this place.

Recommend - Recommend getting a guide. We had two teens with us and they found the monastery very interesting. If you can go on a Tuesday when it’s open late, at night. The last Sunday? of the month the entrance fee is only 10 soles.

A must-see when you visit Arequipa - Nice experience. It is best to go with a guide and after finishing the tour you can continue the tour on your own.

Get a guide - The brilliant colours are what you see in all the photos, and they are amazing, but get a guide to hear the history and stories....it will make it more than a simple instagram moment. One of our favourite sites.

Easy to get to and colorful - Colorful, peaceful - did the self-paced audio tour. Loved the blue and red areas. Just came for Colca so was not expecting to see much in Arequipa

Really worth a visit - This place is really interesting and beautiful to look at. We spent a good few hours wandering around and found ourselves really invested in the history. You can also have a guided tour for an extra price which a lot of people were doing. It was well kept and there was lots of bathrooms and a cafe half way round which we stopped at for a drink. Definitely worth the ticket price.

Impressive - Founded in 1579 thanks to the donation of the assets of Dona Maria de Guzmán, widow of Don Diego Hernández de Mendoza. At the time of its heyday, the largest population in this convent lived there around 500 women, of whom only 180 were religious (the rest were the maidens who served the nuns, the girls who lived there as students, as in a hospitalized hospital, and the refugees who allowed themselves into the convent by right of asylum).

A giant monastery - The most impressive thing is the size of the complex, the visit never ends hehehe. Obviously it has a lot of history, after all it is more than 400 years old. Another interesting point is that it still functions as a monastery. Even though I think the ticket is a little expensive, I think it's worth it as it's the most emblematic attraction in the city.
