Highlights
  • Corgialenios Historical & Cultural Museum - Upon arriving at the Korgialenio Historic and Cultural Museum, visitors can delve into the island’s rich history! This museum showcases the island’s past through photos, paintings, and artifacts, and includes a library with a reading area. Located on the ground floor of the Korgialenio Library, the museum’s mission is to present the history and folklore of the island from the 16th century to 1953, as much of Kefalonian culture was lost in a devastating earthquake. The museum’s collection includes household items, porcelain, silverware, embroidery, daily farm tools, watercolors, lithographs, maps, surveys, church plans, and photographic records with 3,000 images of Kefalonia before the earthquakes, historical figures, architectural details, religious icons, and temples. It also features works of art, wooden temples, sacred vessels, coins, and pictures, along with a wealth of informative literature in the museum’s library.

  • Lithostroto - Argostoli’s main shopping areas are concentrated on the first two parallel streets up from the coastal road and the small vertical streets that cross them. The first street, Siteboron Str, has various shops, but continue to the main shopping street, Lithostroto (paved street), where you can find a wide selection of souvenir, jewelry, shoe, and clothing shops. The street is made of smooth pale stone, which is where it gets its name (be careful if it’s wet!), and is a wide pedestrian-only road. Continuing along Lithostroto, you’ll find Saint Spyridon Church and a variety of coffee shops where you can relax while the kids play. Be sure to look out for local and traditional products, especially sweets.

  • The Bell Tower - On the south side of this wide pedestrianized street is Kabana (Bell) Square with its historic Clock Tower. The square was built during the period when Kefalonia was under Venetian rule (1500–1797). During this time, the square was known as “St. Mark’s Square” but was renamed Bell Tower Square (Kabana) because of the structure, erected around 1790, which towered over all the other buildings at the time. The bell rang on the hour and half-hour and played an important role in the community, not only for timekeeping but also for warnings and announcements of major festivals and events.

  • Drapano Bridge (De Bosset) - Head towards one of the island’s most famous landmarks, the De Bosset Bridge! Visitors can take photos of this man-made stone bridge and learn about its history. Here, you might also spot the local caretta-caretta turtles! The De Bosset Bridge (or De Bosset Causeway) in Kefalonia is the largest stone bridge over a seawater body. It was built in 1813 when Swiss engineer Charles Philippe De Bosset was employed by the British Army. Due to his contributions in studying and constructing the bridge, Monsieur de Bosset was appointed Governor of Kefalonia from 1810-1814 by the British, who ruled the Ionian Islands from 1809-1864.
