Embark on a camel journey to the southernmost point of Elephantine Island where St Simeon’s Monastery resides, a deserted ancient fortress monastery mainly constructed in the 7th century, near Aswan.
The ecclesiastical establishment was named St. Simeon by scientists and explorers. However, older Arabic and Coptic accounts referred to it as Anba Hatre (also known as Hidra, Hadri, Hadra), named after a hermit who was ordained as the bishop of Syene (present day Aswan) by Patriarch Theophilus (385-412 AD).
Anba Hatre got married when he was just eighteen years of age. According to legend, he stumbled upon a funeral procession shortly after his wedding, which moved him to maintain his purity and later to become a follower of Saint Baiman.
After dedicating eight years to rigorous spiritual training under the guidance of his mentor, he secluded himself in the desert where he dedicated his time to understand the life of Saint Antony. His life ended during the reign of Theodosius I.
