Highlights
  • Holy Monastery of Daphni - Situated in Chaidari, on the outskirts of Mount Aigaleo along Athens Avenue, 11 km from the center of Athens, the Daphni Monastery stands on the site of the ancient Sanctuary of Apollo in Daphni. Its remarkable architecture and unique mosaic decorations make it a prime example of Byzantine art. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
  • Corinth Canal - The Diolkos stone road (450 BC), an ancient Greek engineering feat, enabled ships to traverse overland from the Ionian Sea to the Aegean, avoiding the Peloponnesian Peninsula. Similar to the Corinth Canal, which was finally completed in 1893, it provided a safer passage around the peninsula for vessels, though it required immense effort from the men who pulled the ships across the isthmus. Under Greece’s blue skies, we might witness a massive vessel navigating the narrow, rocky canal with minimal clearance on either side, as those aboard marvel at the engineering wonder.
  • Acrocorinth - This ancient fortress sits atop a 575m high rock, with Ancient Corinth at its base. Its perimeter walls stretch approximately 3,000 meters, making it the largest fortress in the Peloponnese and one of the region’s most significant. Inside, you’ll find ruins of the temple of Aphrodite (5th-4th century BC), the spring of Ano Peirini, several Christian churches, a Byzantine underground cistern, mosques, fountains, and more.
  • Ancient Corinth (Archaia Korinthos) - Once one of Greece’s largest and most important cities, Ancient Corinth had a population of 90,000 in 400 BC. The Romans destroyed it in 146 BC, rebuilt it in 44 BC, and later made it the provincial capital of Greece. Located on the Isthmus of Corinth, it connected the Peloponnese to mainland Greece, midway between Athens and Sparta. For Christians, Corinth is notable for the two letters of Saint Paul in the New Testament, First and Second Corinthians, and its mention in the Acts of the Apostles during Paul’s missionary journeys. Pausanias’ second book of Description of Greece is also dedicated to Corinth.
  • Ancient Corinth (Archaia Korinthos) - Lunch immediately after visiting the archaeological site of Corinth (not included).
  • The Diolkos - An ancient boat path from 600 BC.
  • Heraion (Sanctuary of Hera) in Perachora - This site, near Loutraki, extends next to the sea at the western end of the peninsula, in a secluded creek, adding to its mysterious ambiance. The Heraion of Perachora is more than just a temple; it includes a complex of findings from the 9th century BC to the Roman period. Visitors can explore the western courtyard, archaic temple, altar, stoa, arched cistern, and other monuments, along with the fortification walls.
