Highlights
  • Pont Saint-Benezet (Pont d’Avignon) - The bridge Saint-Bénézet or bridge of Avignon was made famous by the popular song On the bridge of Avignon … One dances there, one dances there ….

The bridge was begun in 1177. Long of 920 meters, it had 22 arches and was 4 meters wide. This imposing building, which was called the marvel of time, was built in just 8 years, until 1185. But this first bridge of the Romanesque era is destroyed until the fourth arch during the siege of 1226 The new bridge stretches for about 900 meters and has some 22 arches.

In the Middle Ages, the Pont St Bénezet fits on one of the most important pilgrimage routes between Italy and Spain. It will become indispensable to the papal court that moved to Avignon in the fourteenth century.

Soon, the cardinals moved to Villeneuve to escape the nuisances of Avignon, then described by the poet Petrarch “more infective and more stinky cities of the earth.” The bridge was at this time the most direct link between the multiple residences that the cardinals were building, and the Palais des Papes located inside the ramparts of Avignon.

At each crossing on the bridge, the Popes used to stop in front of the Bénezet chapel to pray for a moment and leave an alms of a florin.

The bridge was paved in 1377 by order of Cardinal Blandiac, in order to remedy the frequent problems of slips causing many accidents and drownings. Louis XIV is one of the last to cross the Rhône before his “collapse” in the seventeenth century. Despite his desire to become owner, he will not be resolved to fund the restoration.

  • Collection Lambert - Museum of Modern Art

The Lambert Collection opened its doors in June 2000, on the occasion of the celebrations “Avignon, European Capital of Culture”. Yvon Lambert, gallerist and collector, decided to deposit his personal collection in a former 18th century mansion, with a view to a future donation. 350 works from the 1960s to the present have been the first fund to have more than 1,200 references. Place of creation, exchange and dissemination, the Lambert Collection offers five sectors that are deployed in the 2000 m2 of the museum: exhibitions, preventive conservation, activities directed at young audiences, the bookstore and its artists’ editions , the restaurant located in the courtyard of the mansion.

  • Philippe-le-Bel Tower - Built on the rock …. the Philippe le Bel Tower … from the name of the Capetian king who had it built in the 13th century for the sole purpose of controlling access to the Pont d’Avignon.

It is a perfect example of medieval military architecture, symbolizing royal power in the face of pontifical rule.

  • Fort Saint-Andre - The construction of this strong beginat at the end of the 12th century.

The latter defended in the 14th century the Benedictine abbey of the same name.

Its remarkable gardens are ranked among the most beautiful in France.

  • Jardins de l’abbaye Saint-Andre - The abbey of Saint-André also invites to the discovery!

From its vaulted rooms, sumptuously decorated in the 17th century, to its exteriors …

Because the gardens of the Abbey, having received the label: Remarkable Gardens, are really worth the detour! Romanesque remains and Renaissance Tuscan style ornaments, display their splendor of yesteryear, in the middle of the rose beds, and Mediterranean plants.

  • Chartreuse de Villeneuve lez Avignon - Chartreuse of the Val de Bénédiction, former residence cardinalice, built under the impetus of Pope Innocent VI, from 1353.
  • Musee Pierre-de-Luxembourg - Housed in a mansion of the 14th century, where followed, many cardinals.
  • Ile De La Barthelasse - It is in the heart of this green lung of 700 hectares, on the right bank of the Rhone, that we will observe our next stop.

A stopover of 10 to 15 minutes, during which you can relax and enjoy the breathtaking panorama of the city of the Popes, located directly opposite!

Unless you prefer to continue the bike ride, or to reach the historic center, by taking the free river shuttle.

Beautiful experience - The tour is very good and Avignon is beautiful and the people are very friendly. He greeted us. We loved it . We ate very well. And it became night. I think we walked it all. Even a little street that I think is called "Dintorieur's". Very pretty

AVIGNON OUTSKIRTS BY BUS - This tour is worthwhile to get the lie if the land on the outskirts of the city. It more of less skirts around the city walls and goes across the Rhone and back again over two different bridges. This tour is on the usual double decker bus seen in many cities, the audio is good. There is a smaller 'mini' articulated bus if you want a tour of the inner city.

Morning tour - We were the only passengers on this tour so it felt special. We enjoyed the audio guide and the view from the top deck. The driver was charming and all in all it was a very pleasant way to spend some time getting to know Avignon. I did admire the bravery of anyone driving such a large vehicle around some of the streets.

Grossly overpriced for the experience which was not much - A very rushed 1 hr city tour spent at least 30 min of the hour in traffic Could not take any photos because the bus was going too fast Not worth the money.

No tour but able to purchase tickets - This was a disaster. We booked the tickets the night before. Spent over an hour (should have been a 25 minute drive) trying to get to the start of the tour, only to realize that there was construction and the road was closed. Finally found somewhere to park the car and walked to the meeting place to find a sign saying all tours were canceled that day. Asked the woman working at the ticket counter about a refund and while she tried to be helpful she said we had to contact TripAdvisor for the refund.

Never Again- waste of money - First Viator allowed us to sign up when the driver takes their lunch! Daily from 1pm -2pm. 2nd driving is so fast and there is no tour guide only audio. Third meet up is not where it was posted in Viator.

Don’t Stop Here - Their map was awful and we waited at the spot marked on the map which happened to be in the wrong place. We waited for another hour for the bus to come back, only to find that we could ride it but not use it to return to our original starting point.

Bus was cancelled and still no refund - I can't comment on how good the bus tour would have been, I booked in advance and when I arrived I was told the bus had broken down a few days before and wouldn't be repaired till after I had left. Visit Avignon say they can't refund me as I booked through Trip Advisor, and Trip Advisor acknowledged receipt of my complaint but then no further contact. I wouldn't book in advance

Don’t Use For Last-Minute Plans - I gave it a one only because I couldn’t give a zero. I was told—only after I made the purchase—that I had to print the tickets, I found this INCREDIBLY frustrating: I’m traveling! Where would I have access to a printer?!? (I was able to finally use the Tourism office, but too late to use the scheduled tour) I then called the number provided, but because the person who answered couldn’t speak English, they said something that I couldn’t understand and hung up the phone. So I wasn’t able to take the tour, make any changes, or get a refund.
