Highlights
  • Swoyambhu Mahachaitya - Perched on a hill overlooking Kathmandu Valley, Swayambhunath Stupa is an iconic symbol of Nepal’s rich religious tapestry. Known colloquially as the “Monkey Temple” due to the myriad of monkeys that frolic in its precincts, the stupa is as much a nature reserve as it is a place of worship. As visitors ascend its ancient stone steps, they are greeted by the rustling of prayer flags and the gentle hum of devotees offering their prayers. These flags, dyed in the five elemental colors, flutter in the wind, carrying with them prayers and mantras to the heavens. The stupa itself is a majestic sight; its white dome symbolizes the world and the golden spire represents the path to enlightenment. Of particular interest are the Buddha eyes painted on all four sides of the stupa’s tower. These eyes are referred to as the ‘Eyes of Compassion. As you explore the complex, take a moment to spin the prayer wheels, inscribed with the mantra ‘Om Mani Padme Hum,’ sending blessings and well wishes to all.
  • Boudhanath Stupa - Standing proudly amidst the bustling heart of Kathmandu is the Boudhanath Stupa, an immense dome-shaped monument that is a beacon of spirituality and devotion. Renowned as one of the largest stupas in the world, Boudhanath is a magnet for Tibetan Buddhists and travelers alike. Its enormous white dome, representing the universe, is crowned by a glittering gold tower, which is adorned with the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha, keeping a benevolent watch over the city and its inhabitants. Surrounding the stupa is a flurry of activity – devout pilgrims, draped in traditional attire, perform “kora” by circumambulating the monument, spinning the countless prayer wheels and reciting sacred mantras. As the evening draws in and butter lamps are lit, Boudhanath transforms into a luminescent marvel, with the stupa’s silhouette casting a profound glow against the night sky.
  • Pashupatinath Temple - Nestled on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River, the Pashupatinath Temple is a cornerstone of Hindu spirituality in Nepal. As the most revered temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, it draws devotees from across the subcontinent, who come seeking blessings and offering prayers. The temple complex, with its intricately carved wooden rafters and gilded rooftops, stands as a testament to Nepal’s architectural and cultural heritage. Non-Hindu visitors are not permitted within the temple’s sanctum sanctorum, but the surrounding grounds offer a tapestry of rich traditions and rituals. Of particular note are the ghats, or stone-paved cremation platforms, where funeral pyres burn in a poignant testament to the circle of life and death. With its intertwining of spirituality, ritual, and culture, a visit to Pashupatinath provides a profound glimpse into the heart of Hindu Nepal, reminding visitors of the transient nature of life and the eternal spirit’s quest for liberation.
  • Aryaghat Bridge - Pashupati Aryaghat is a ghat located near Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu, Nepal. It is one of the most famous ghats in Nepal.
  • Patan Durbar Square - Amidst the labyrinth of alleyways and courtyards of the ancient city of Patan lies its crowning jewel, the Patan Durbar Square. A mesmerizing ensemble of palaces, courtyards, and temples, this square is a living testament to Nepal’s golden age of architecture and craftsmanship. The iconic Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, also known as the Golden Temple, shimmers in the sunlight with its ornate golden façades and intricate woodwork. Nearby, the Mahabouddha Temple, made entirely of terracotta tiles, each etched with the image of Buddha, showcases the exquisite detailing and artistry of local craftsmen. The central palace, once the royal residence of Malla kings, now houses the Patan Museum, where visitors can delve deep into the art, culture, and history of the Kathmandu Valley. A walk through Patan Durbar Square is not just a journey through physical spaces, but a voyage back in time, unveiling the layers of history and heritage that have shaped Nepal’s cultural landscape.
  • Patan Museum - Set within the historic precincts of Patan Durbar Square, the Patan Museum stands as a custodian of Nepal’s cultural and artistic heritage. Housed in a meticulously restored palace, once the residence of Malla kings, the museum showcases the finest collection of traditional Nepalese art. As you meander through its corridors, you are treated to a visual narrative of the evolution of Nepalese art, from intricate wood carvings to delicate metalwork and vibrant thangkas (Tibetan Buddhist paintings). Each artifact, whether it’s a bejeweled statue of a deity or a centuries-old manuscript, is a testament to the unparalleled craftsmanship of Nepalese artisans. The museum’s beautifully landscaped garden offers a serene space for reflection, merging nature with artistry in a harmonious blend. Beyond its exhibits, the Patan Museum serves as a center of learning, providing insight into the historical, religious, and social contexts that shaped these artistic expressions.
  • Taleju Mandir Temple - Enshrined within the historical milieu of Patan’s Durbar Square, the Taleju Temple holds a unique blend of divinity and architectural splendor. A cornerstone of Patan’s spiritual landscape, the temple is dedicated to Taleju Bhawani, a manifestation of the goddess Durga. Built during the Malla dynasty’s reign, its multi-roofed structure is a prime example of Nepal’s iconic Newari architecture. The temple’s tiered pagoda design, adorned with intricate wooden lattices and ornamental carvings, stands as a testament to the exemplary craftsmanship of ancient Nepalese artisans. One of the striking features of this temple is its elevated platform, which is accessed through a flight of stone steps, guarded by stone lions and other mythical creatures. The sanctum’s interiors, though generally closed to the public, are said to house a majestic idol of the goddess, to whom devotees offer prayers seeking her protection and blessings.
  • Krishna Temple - Anchoring itself in the heart of Patan Durbar Square, the Krishna Temple stands as a magnificent ode to Nepal’s rich Newari architecture and deep-rooted devotion to Lord Krishna. Constructed in the 17th century under the patronage of King Siddhi Narsingh Malla, this exquisite stone edifice is a marvel of Shikhara-style architecture, native to the Indian subcontinent but beautifully adopted and adapted by Nepalese artisans. Each tier of the temple, ascending towards the sky, seems to narrate a story, drawing devotees and admirers into the rich tapestry of Hindu mythology. Every year during the festival of Krishna Janmashtami, marking the birth of Lord Krishna, the temple becomes a vibrant epicenter of devotion, with thousands gathering to pay homage, sing devotional songs, and celebrate the deity’s descent to earth. The Krishna Temple is not just a structure of stone and art; it embodies the spirit, culture, and timeless traditions of the Nepalese people.

Absolute best day exploring Kathmandu! - Had the absolute best day exploring Kathmandu with guide extraordinaire, Ram! He was soooo…everything! So knowledgeable, so fun, so kind, so helpful, so interesting, On this tour, I learned so much about so many things regarding Kathmandu and Nepal, in general—history, religion, government, geography, art, and more. And, as if all of that wasn’t enough, Ram went above and beyond by helping me sort out things for the rest of my trip. My plans had gotten shuffled around and I wasn’t sure the best way to approach some things given the changes and Ram took the time to think my situation through with me, offered me excellent insight and advice and even facilitated setting things up for me (can I say…not his job! lol). But he did it because he’s just a great guy and he also explained that the philosophy of this company, Luxury Holidays Nepal, and the Nepalese culture is wanting every visitor to have a wonderful and positive experience in their country. Well, that’s what I had and that’s what you’ll have, too, booking this tour! Oh! I almost forgot, Ram also has a fallback career as a photographer/videographer given all the great shots he so kindly took of me today since I was on my own. Icing on the cake of an already great day!
