Duration: 12 hours
Cancellation: 24 hours
Highlights
  • Gala Gapisi - We will pick up from central hotels in Baku except Hotels that are situated in the Old City and near by. That guests are coming to the Double Gates - main gates of the Old City (Qosha Qala qapisi).
  • Besh Barmag Mountain - Just over an hour’s drive north-west of Baku along the Guba highway is a 382-metre high mountain whose bizarre shape long ago led to it being called Mt. Beshbarmag, which is Azerbaijani for ‘Five-finger Mountain’. Legend has it that sometime in the ancient past a prophet called Khidr ventured here in search of a ‘potion of life’ and having drunk from a spring at the summit achieved immortality. Today the mountain is shrouded in mystery with locals coming here to pray for strength and good fortune.
  • Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop Mt. Lebanon - One of Azerbaijan’s most beautiful stretches of road leads for about 40 kilometres from the Guba-Baku highway west towards the mountain village of Altiaghaj. Roughly mid-way between the two one passes through a dramatic valley flanked by rolling shale mountains whose astonishing red, orange, pink and chalk-coloured swirls led British travel writer Mark Elliott (author of the very popular ‘Azerbaijan’ guidebook) to dub them the Candy Cane Mountains, a name that’s stuck with travellers ever since.
  • Red Village - The next destination will be Guba city, which is located in one of the most beautiful natural landscapes of Azerbaijan. On the way to Guba, our guests will visit the unique settlement of Jews in mountains, “Caucasian Jerusalem” - the Red Town. The village has 13 synagogues, among which two are operational. There are about 4-5 thousand Jews live in Qirmizi Qesebe that is symbol of pluralism in Azerbaijan and symbol of peace and harmony among the different religions.
  • Gudyalchayli - If you go further from Gechresh forest, you find yourself in the Gudyalchay canyons: steep ascents and descents of the road pass through the steep walls of the gorge. The road that passes through two mountains, steep cliffs as well as beautify forest make the view of this village charming.
  • Qechresh - Qechresh is one of the largest villages in the Guba region. The area is covered with forest on all sides. Qechresh is famous for its natural springs and plants.
  • Khinalug - Khinalig is an ancient Caucasian village dating back to the Caucasian Albanian period. It is located north of Guba, in the midst of the mountains of the Greater Caucasus, which divide Russia and the South Caucasus, at an altitude of 2100-2200 meters above sea level over the Kudialchay River. Famous for its language, peculiar customs and traditions. Today, about two thousand people live in Khinalig. Almost the entire population is indigenous. In Khinalig retain their language for more than 4000 years.
  • Guba-Khachmaz Region - We will start 9 Am in the morning. The way to Guba Khinaluq and Back to Baku total duration which we spent in the car will be approximately 8 hours

Additional Information

Quba has always stood out as one of Azerbaijan’s largest and most stunning regions! If you’re planning to explore other cities in Azerbaijan, don’t miss out on Quba! This city, founded in the 15th century, lies 165km north of Baku.

One of the noteworthy destinations in Quba is the Khinaliq village, which is the most distant and highest among all the other villages in the area, nestled within the Caucasian mountains. This isolation has been a key factor in the survival of the village’s residents during invasions. Tracing its roots to the Albanian era, relics of prehistoric human caves remain preserved within the mountainous terrain. Given its extensive past, Khinaliq is among the oldest continuously inhabited regions globally and has been enlisted in UNESCO’s list of World Historical Monuments.

Excellent tour of Guba, Khinalig and the Candy mountains - This small group tour offers a nice escape from Baku for the day to see some stunning mountain scenery and have a local lunch. We can't fault the enthusiasm of our guide, Layla, who made the day fun and interesting, and whose positive outlook never waivered. The drive up to Guba and Khinalig takes a good couple of hours, but there are stops along the way (most notably the Candy mountains) to break up the journey so the day didn't feel too long. Would recommend!

Fantastic tour in Azerbaijan mountains - This was an amazing experience, which I totally recommend (we did the tour on 9th Sept). We both really enjoyed the itinerary, which was very well paced. We loved the beautiful colours of the candy cane mountains and the history in the red village was interesting. The highlight of the tour was the mountain views as we got closer to Khinalig - just stunning - and the lunch in the house in Khinalig village was also a fantastic experience. Wonderful hospitality. Our guide Leyla was an absolute delight, huge energy and lots of fun. She was so welcoming and even helped with taking photos during the day. She explained the sights clearly and it was an all-around great experience. We think Leyla is one of the best guides we have ever had. The driver of the tour was also great fun, and we enjoyed his singing!! Overall, this is a great way to experience a different side to Azerbaijan and we totally recommend it.

Breath taking views and landscapes, amazing weather in the mountains and perfect local blend of food and history - It was a lovely day out for us where we got to experience the scenic candy cane mountains , breath taking views from Xinaliq and experienced a traditional Azerbaijani meal at house in Xinaliq as well. The tour was very well managed by our tour guide Layla who was full of life and gave us very good insights into the local history and culture. The driver too was very good and expertly took us through the interesting terrain! Highly recommend this day trip to anyone wanting to check out something other than the usual Baku sights! We also had a great mix of people from different countries in our group which added to the overall experience!

Enjoyable excursion - Enjoyable day excursion from Baku. The trip through the mountains to Khinalig was definitely the highlight. At times the road travels above the clouds. Torghul was an excellent guide, extremely knowledgeable and informative about the area and culture, as well as Azerbaijan in general, and Mohammed was an excellent driver, navigating the roads and traffic with ease. Highly recommended

Wonderful day trip - Actually, wonderful day trip from Baku! Toghrul was an excellent guide and an absolute fountain of knowledge about the area and cultural, as well as is there bond in its history. Mohammed was the driver and did a wonderful job of navigating through the terrain, seamlessly and smoothly. Khinalig is a good ways into the Caucus mountains and the drive to reach it was a highlight, at times traversing above the clouds.

Stunning mountain landscapes - We did enjoy this trip, but felt that the itinerary was a bit over-egged. It was essentially a very long drive to Khinalig village for lunch. The stops along the way were not much more than comfort breaks, as opposed to a chance to see anything meaningful. This was OK and we did enjoy the day and are glad we did the trip, but we thought the itinerary descriptions were a little misleading. For instance, we had expected to see much more of the Red Village, but in reality, it was just a few minutes' stop outside the synagogue, also it would have been good to have had a guided walk around Khinalig village, rather than simply a lunch stop. The landscape and mountains of Guba were truly stunning, so it was worth the trip just to see them. Lunch at the museum house in the village was also an amazing experience, though the options for vegetarians were limited to soup, salad and rice because all main courses were meat-based even though we were asked about this during the booking process. There was a lot of pressure from the guide to write a review of the trip before we left the mini-bus, which we felt was unprofessional. Overall though, an experience we wouldn't have missed.

Choose a better tour! - Cool places to see but never saw them in any great detail as we were rushed from itinerary point to point. 10 mins at each place is nowhere near enough. We should have started earlier or made it an overnight tour. It's ridiculous to rush this, especially given the conditions of the mountain roads (NO barriers)! Ulya was disappointing too, not showing any concern when I got bitten as she claimed there were no bees in Azerbaijan. In the summer heat. OK then... Give this tour a miss!
