Highlights
  • Madu Ganga Biodiversity Area - A mangrove lagoon connected to the sea by a narrow canal, featuring 64 islands of various sizes, some of which are inhabited. The islands and shores host relatively undisturbed mangrove vegetation, rich in biodiversity, meeting 7 Criteria of International Importance. Many globally and nationally endangered, endemic, and rare species, such as the endemic and endangered plant Shorea affinis, the vulnerable and CITES-listed Mugger, the endangered Purple-faced Leaf Monkey, the Estuarine Crocodile, Flapshell Turtles, and the Indian Python, find refuge here. Located 1.5 hours from Colombo. $30 per person for the boat and driver.
  • Galle Dutch Fort - Also known as the Galle Fort, this fortification was initially built by the Portuguese on Sri Lanka’s southwestern coast in the late 16th century. The Dutch extensively modified it in the 17th century, making it a significant archaeological, architectural, and historic monument that showcases European influence in Southeast Asia from the 16th to the 19th centuries. UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site for its unique urban ensemble illustrating the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions, meeting criterion number four for such recognition. Located 45 minutes from the Madu River safari.
  • Jungle Beach - Jungle Beach is a picturesque bay nestled in a forested area, one of Sri Lanka’s hidden gems. It offers a unique holiday experience with its pristine natural charm, as it is not frequented by many tourists due to its secluded location. Jungle Beach provides various water sports, including snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming, and boat rides. The reefs a few meters offshore are ideal for snorkeling, showcasing the region’s exotic marine life. Located 10 minutes from the Galle Dutch Fort.
  • Japanese Peace Pagoda - Situated on the hillside of the Galle Fort, the Peace Pagoda is a serene and beautiful place to visit. Built by the Mahayana sect to promote peace in the Sri Lankan conflict zone, the Pagoda is a sight to behold, especially when viewed from Unawatuna, where it appears to emerge from the jungle. Located 5 minutes from Jungle Beach.
  • Talpe - Talpe is renowned for its beach, ideal for swimming and surfing, with a small coral reef forming a natural swimming pool. The beautiful Koggala River adds to the area’s charm. Entrance fee: $5. Located 15 minutes from the Peace Pagoda.
  • Stilt Fishermen Sri Lanka - In chest-deep water just off the beach, stilt fishermen sit on crossbars fixed to single poles planted in the seabed. These fishermen, among the poorest, spend hours casting their lines to catch small fish for sale or personal use. Located 5 minutes from Talpe.
  • Coconut Tree Hill - A popular spot for travelers’ Instagram profiles, Coconut Tree Hill is a must-visit in Mirissa. This private coconut estate with a nearby temple is set on a high cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean and a pristine stretch of golden beach. Accessible throughout the day or night, it is located 25 minutes from the stilt fishermen.
  • Secret Beach - Secret Beach Mirissa is a small, hidden beach with a bay area near the main Mirissa Beach. Although it has gained popularity, it remains less crowded than the main beach, retaining its hidden gem status. The beach is nestled in a cove, flanked by lush green palm-covered hills, creating several smaller beaches.
  • Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project - Founded by Dudley Perera in 1981, this project aims to conserve sea turtles and protect them from predators like birds, dogs, and crabs. Visitors can learn about the protection and hatching process and may visit in the evening to release baby turtles into the sea, minimizing predator risk. A stop on the way back to Colombo.

Incredible time with a dedicated and passionate private guide, customisable to fit interests - In January 2024, I had the pleasure of embarking on a mesmerising full-day exploration of Sri Lanka's picturesque southwestern coastline, led by the delightful and knowledgeable tour guide, Sanchita. Departing from Negombo early in the day to avoid traffic, the tour promised an immersive journey into the history, culture, and wildlife of this captivating region, and it certainly delivered an unforgettable experience. Our day started with exploring Galle Fort, guided by Sanchita's expertise, was truly captivating. His knowledge of the fort's history and architecture brought the surroundings to life, allowing us to appreciate the cultural significance and remarkable preservation of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stroll through its cobblestone streets and ramparts was a journey back in time, offering a glimpse into the colonial legacy and the stories woven into its centuries-old walls. The next stops for us were Jungle Beach, and then the Japanese Peace Pagoda, and Talpe all offered unique and diverse experiences, from moments of tranquility and natural beauty to cultural immersion and breathtaking sights. Each stop felt carefully curated, ensuring that we encountered the full spectrum of the region's allure, with Sanchita tailoring the experience to suit our interests. Of course, witnessing the iconic stilt fishermen of Sri Lanka was an unforgettable sight, made even more special by Sanchita's ability to convey the deep-rooted traditions and customs of these skilled fishermen. We stopped at Coconut Tree hill for some snaps which turned out amazing. We then had a highlight special visit to the secluded and breathtaking Secret Beach, a true hidden gem that revealed the unspoiled beauty of Sri Lanka's coastline. Sanchita guided us through the pristine shores, narrating the coastal folklore and the significance of this well-kept secret, allowing us to appreciate the tranquility and natural splendor that surrounded us. Sanchita ensured that every aspect of the experience was well-organised and enjoyable, catering to our interests and preferences with impeccable attention to detail. Throughout the day, Sanchita's attentive guidance, warm demeanor, and wealth of knowledge truly enriched our experience, elevating the tour from a mere sightseeing excursion to a deeply personal and insightful journey. His passion for his country and dedication to providing an exceptional experience was evident at every turn, making this tour an exceptional and memorable highlight of our Sri Lankan visit. In summary, the full-day exploration of Sri Lanka's southwestern coastline in January 2024, guided by the exceptional Sanchita, surpassed all expectations. From the captivating natural encounters to the rich historical immersion, every moment was thoughtfully orchestrated, ensuring that our journey was not only educational and enriching but also filled with warmth and genuine hospitality. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone seeking a truly authentic and comprehensive introduction to the wonders of Sri Lanka's southwestern shores.

A day visiting the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka! - I want to say how fantastic this tour was, such a jam-packed day with Sanchitha, as well he let me choose some extra destinations in Mirissa as that was a place I was excited to see. Had some great conversation with him as we ventured the southern part of Sri Lanka, if I had more time I would have booked the tour with him going to central Sri Lanka (Definitely if I return I will do this tour too!). If I could give this tour more than 5 stars I would, you won't be disappointed, this tour has everything and more, from beaches to conservation parks to spiritual landmarks to boat rides! Thank you Sanchitha, I will always remember this day tour!
