- Montana de Montserrat - Montserrat is a rocky mountain situated 50 km southwest of Barcelona. It is regarded as the most significant and important mountain in Catalonia. The name Montserrat is derived from the Catalan words Mont (mountain) and serrat (serrated).
The mountain’s importance stems from the legend of the miraculous appearance of the Madonna and Child in one of the caves, which was named Santa Cova (The Holy Cave). The wooden carving of the Madonna and Child is preserved in the Church of the monastery and can be visited. This image of the Madonna is popularly known as La Moreneta (The Black Madonna) due to its dark color.
