Highlights
  • St. Dimitrii of Basarbovo Monastery - It was established by Hesychast monks during the period of the second Bulgarian Empire (1185-1396).
The monastery got its name from St. Dimitrii Basarbovski, a hermit that spent his entire life at these rocks. The legend says that after Basarbovski died, his body was brought to Bucharest, and as soon as his remains got there, people stopped dying from the plague.
He got canonised, and his relics can still be found in the Metropolitan Church in Bucharest today.
  • Arbanasi - It is known for the rich history and large number of historical monuments, such as 17th- and 18th-century churches and examples of Bulgarian National Revival architecture, which have turned it into a popular tourist destination.
  • Konstantsalieva House - The Konstantsalieva house, on one of the main roads through the village, originally built in the 17th century, has been beautifully restored in National Revival style. It reflects not only the wealth of the owners but also the attention to detail and the quality craftsmanship of that time. In a style typical for Arbanassi, the two storey house is set in a large yard surrounded by a high stone wall.
  • Tsarevets - Tsarevets is a medieval stronghold located on a hill with the same name in Veliko Tarnovo in northern Bulgaria. Tsarevets it served as the Second Bulgarian Empire’s primary fortress and strongest bulwark between 1185 and 1393, housing the royal and the patriarchal palaces, and it is also a popular tourist attraction.
  • Veliko Tarnovo - Often referred as the “City of the Tsars”, Veliko Tarnovo is famously known as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, attracting many tourists with its unique architecture.
The old part of the town is situated on three hills, Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, and Sveta Gora, rising amidst the meanders of the Yantra.

Day trip to Bulgaria :) - This was one of the best tours I’ve taken through TripAdvisor, mainly because my guide was just super awesome. If you have the ability to request Roxanna, do so because she is exceptional. We immediately connected on a genuine level and had such an excellent time for the entirety of the drive. The time just flew by! By then end of the trip, I genuinely felt I had made a lovey new friend. :) It’s very evident that she has a passion for learning about the history and cultures in the region and takes a lot of pride in explaining the context and background through the tours. She also took special care at each stop to ensure I was able to appreciate the scenery, stop to shop for souvenirs and knew the best places to stop for authentic Bulgarian and Romanian meals. One note to be aware of in the off season-some attractions may spontaneously have limited opening hours. This really can’t be helped by the independent tour companies though. Another company I previously booked with similarly had this issue and cancelled my tour altogether, so I am very grateful I was able to book with this company and have a really memorable private tour instead. :)

An enjoyable day trip to Bulgaria - We had a wonderful day trip to nearby Bulgaria from Bucharest. Bogdan was an excellent guide and took great pains to make sure we had a wonderful smooth journey and a lovely time visiting a monastery, a small historical town and finally Veliko Tarnovo. He was entertaining and provided historical and fun facts along the way. He gave us excellent suggestions for things to do. He had brought some snacks and apples from his garden which made a nice personal touch. We had a wonderful taste of medieval Bulgaria and would recommend this tour.

Medieval majesty - You cram a lot of great things into one day trip. Alin my guide for the day was excellent. A nice chap with lots of historical and local knowledge. The contrasts between Barsabovo Monastery and Tsarevets was fascinating! Food with a view in Arbanasi was special also, a great trip.
