- Batu Caves - Batu Caves is a renowned and iconic tourist destination in Selangor. Home to a Hindu temple and shrine, it draws thousands of worshipers and tourists. Located just north of Kuala Lumpur, this limestone outcrop features three main caves with temples and Hindu shrines. The main highlight is the large statue of a Hindu deity at the entrance, along with a steep 272-step climb offering a breathtaking view of the city skyline. Monkeys play around the caves, making it a popular spot for rock climbing enthusiasts. The site also showcases paintings and scenes of Hindu gods.
- Petronas Twin Towers - Standing at 451.9 meters, the magnificent Petronas Twin Towers are a globally recognized symbol of modern Malaysia. They are the centerpiece of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) development, which includes landmarks like the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Suria KLCC Shopping Mall, luxury hotels, a mosque, and the beautifully landscaped KLCC Park. Visitors can explore the Skybridge on the 41st floor and the viewing deck on the 86th floor.
- Menara Kuala Lumpur - Towering at 421 meters and situated 94 meters above sea level on Bukit Nanas, KL Tower is a prominent feature of the city’s skyline. Its architecture reflects the country’s Islamic heritage, with intricate Arabic scripts, Islamic tiles, classic floral and abstract motifs, and soothing color combinations.
- East Coast Batik Sdn Bhd (Batik CHONG) - Established in 1974, East Coast Batik (914804-X) (formerly Syarikat East Coast) is one of the oldest batik and handicrafts centers in Klang Valley. A visit to the gallery reveals that batik is more than just elaborately designed cloth. Syarikat East Coast offers a comprehensive experience in Malaysian batik and handicrafts.
- Royal Selangor Visitor Centre - The Visitor Centre takes you back over a century to the founding of Royal Selangor and its deep connection to Malaysia’s history. Complimentary guided tours educate visitors about the development of tin mining in the Malay Peninsula in the 1800s. The center also features traditional pewtersmithing tools, antique pewter, and ancient tin currency in its Pewter Museum.
- Istana Negara - Istana Negara, or the National Palace, is the official residence of the King of Malaysia. This grand building, located on Jalan Duta, became the National Palace in November 2011, replacing the old palace on Jalan Istana. It boasts 22 domes, with the largest reaching up to 40 meters. Note: Visits are limited to the exterior.
- National Monument - The National Monument honors those who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom, especially during the nation’s struggle against communism. The grounds feature one of the world’s largest free-standing bronze sculptures, created in 1966 by Felix de Weldon, who also designed the famous Iwo Jima Monument in Washington, D.C.
- Malayan Railway Administration Building - This beautiful old building, known for its Moorish architecture, is one of Malaysia’s most stunning historical structures.
- National Mosque (Masjid Negara) - Masjid Negara is one of the city’s most distinguished landmarks, featuring a unique star-shaped dome and a 73-meter high minaret. Located near the KL Lake Gardens, visitors are advised to dress appropriately, with women required to wear headscarves.
- Sultan Abdul Samad Building - Situated in front of Dataran Merdeka, the iconic Sultan Abdul Samad Building houses the Supreme and High Courts. Known for its unique Moorish design and clock tower, it is a popular photo spot for visitors.
- Merdeka Square - Located opposite the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and next to the Royal Selangor Club, Merdeka Square is the historic site where the Union Flag was lowered, and the Malayan flag was raised for the first time at midnight on August 31, 1957. It has since been the venue for the annual Merdeka Parade.
- National Museum - Muzium Negara, originally the site of the Selangor Museum established in 1898, was rebuilt after Malaysia’s independence in 1957. The museum features various exhibits depicting the country’s historical background, with rotating displays. It’s best to call ahead to check the current exhibits.
- Sri Maha Mariamman Temple - This stunning Hindu temple, one of the oldest, features a magnificent 22-meter-high gate tower and portico adorned with intricately carved images of Hindu deities. Inside, the deities of the Hindu goddess Maha Mariamman are embellished with gold and precious stones. The area is filled with the sights and sounds of peddlers selling jasmine garlands and aromatic incense.
- Little India Brickfields - Brickfields began as a brick-making center in the late 19th century after a fire and flood in 1881 destroyed Kuala Lumpur’s wooden and thatched structures. British Resident Sir Frank Swettenham ordered the use of brick and tile for new buildings, giving the town its purpose.
