Awesome experience - May was a great guide. A section of the wall was closed, but May found the detour trail and we were back on the wall in no time. The hike is tough, be prepared for climbing and scrambling over obstacles. Well worth it for the views without the crowds.

Great Wall Hike Interrupted - Great hike despite the detour. We couldn’t do the planned hike to Mutianyu due to officers along the route requiring us to go back down. I was still able to see and hike a part of the Great Wall I’d never seen before. I was grateful for as much as I got to hike and even had the personalized opportunity to visit a tea house after the hike.

Great Experience! - Great experience, started the hike in an area where the wall is in its unrestored state and with almost no other people around. Peter is an excellent guide, very knowledgeable, friendly and speaks very good English. We would highly recommend this hike.

Absolutely fantastic - Just an awesome way to experience the Wall in its unrestored state with hardly anyone else around. The transportation was first rate. My guide was friendly and courteous. The drop-off is at a small village and the hike begins. The hike is a fairly strenuous mountian climb up, perfect to experience the local forest and get "leg day" done. The climb comes to the Wall at a watchtower, requiring a short improvised ladder to enter. Then just meandering on top of the wall, by yourself (came across only 3 other people on this part of the tour), is just magical. Even though, being unrestored, it is perhaps not as photogenic as the restored sections, the lack of other people and the silence and seeing nature slowly reclaim things allowed my imagination to concentrate on what life would have been like back then. There is just enough danger on the hike up and wandering to make it feel like a true adventure. My only disappointment was that the hike up and along the unrestored section ended too early, I could have done that all day. The last part of the wall is along a "tourist" section, restored, and finishes with either a cable car or walk down (client choice). After the hike lunch at a very nice restaurant was provided. Expect about 4 hours of hiking depending on pace, 3 1/2 hours of driving, and an hour for lunch. Definitely recommend for those in the mood for a difficult climb rewarded by have a good section of the Wall to yourself.

AMAZING - Great Wall, whichever part you wanted to visit he is the man to go to. We chose to take the cable car up and down and walk the Wall from Mutianyu to Jiankou - it was unbelievable, words just can't express how amazing the whole experience was. The views, the feel of the history in every step and stone. We didn't want to leave, it was so magnificent. We would highly recommend Jonny for whatever part of the wall you want to visit, the difficult for the very fit, or the more gentle parts for the not so fit. He does overnight camping on the wall, whatever you choose to do you will enjoy.

Superb! - We did this day trip with our 8-year old son and he hiked this section no problem. Our guide Dennis and his driver picked us up at our hotel in a new minivan. It was a private tour for just our family. Dennis gave us great history all the way to the Wall. He spoke excellent English and gave very clear expectations. There was never any up-selling or awkward moments that sometimes accompany a tour. Everything was very easy and professional with this company. I highly recommend! Dennis was superb. This is a fair bit of hiking - much of it uphill. If you are in bad shape, it will hurt but it's doable. If you are in moderate shape, you'll be sore in the calf muscles. If you are in great shape, it's a breeze. This is a WAY better option than just going to see the wall on a bus. Hiking along the unrestored section toward Mutianyu gave us time to marvel at the vastness of the wall and the surrounding mountains. Must Do's: - Take the toboggan down. - Eat at the local chain dumpling restaurant at the bottom of the wall in Mutianyu. - Go in mid-October (before the leaves drop off) to miss the big crowds.

Highlight of our Beijing travels - As a family of five (kids 18,16 and 9) we hiked from Jiankou to Mutianyu. We took a private tour with Roy as our guide. It’s a steep hike through the forest up to the great wall, quite an excersise. Make sure you bring water and snacks ( the included lunch is actually around 3.30PM) The views are awesome and there were hardly any other people at the Jiankou part of the wall. Maybe because it was slightly raining and misty, which actually made the experience even better. Would defenitely recommend Roy as a guide. Pick up from the hotel was accurate. He speaks perfectly well English and shared his great knowledge with us. Could not have done this without him.
