Duration: 4 hours

Highlights
  • Trg Republike - This walking tour portrays the most contradictory era of Serbia covering the period from World War II to 2000-s. Our story can be started with a „once upon a time”, nodding to the fairytalelike mentality of the generations born and raised during this period and the nostalgia for the golden years led by the towering figure of Josip Broz Tito. Conspiracy theories and urban legends from the 2nd half of the 20th century will take you through the rise and reign of Communism in Yugoslavia.

You will meet our guide, your comrade at the place where the Communist Yugoslavia had been conceived. Republic Square is the place where Tito’s inspiring speech as an overture for the proclamation of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia happened.

All along the route of the tour, you’ll see socialistic grey edifices belonging to the constructivism era mixed with numerous monuments from the era of the Yugoslavian Kingdom and the last couple of decades.

  • Terazije - Terazije Square will tell you stories about glamorous holidays and festivities, and you will learn about world-known celebrities and untypical guests in Hotel Moskva.

The former square of Marx and Engels with the high-and-mighty Trade Union Hall will tell you how the cult of work was the ideal of Yugoslavian society and how one miner became a superstar.

  • Пионирски парк - At the Pioneer’s Park, the ritual of the pioneer oath will be the theme, as well as how the socialist regime was the most liberal of all countries within this system.

Allowing the influence of the West in music, a change of lifestyle was created. Each good story needs to have dark parts, so in this one, we will share it with you without censure.

On your way, you will see the monument of Ivo Andrić, a Nobel Prized Serbian writer and a Serbian ambassador in Berlin at the beginning of World War II.

Afterward, as we would like to provide you with the full experience of the 50-year-long historical period of former Yugoslavia, you will catch a trolley, a symbol of public transportation back then, which is still active.

It will bring you to the elite district of Belgrade called Dedinje, famous for numerous embassies and residential villas, but also the complex of the Museum of Yugoslavia.

  • Museum of Yugoslavia - It is devoted to the life and deeds of Josip Broz Tito, the famous communist leader revered as an outstanding man who led the country to a bright future.

In the museum, you will see a stunning collection of ceremonial presents given to the Yugoslavian President, one of the most valued being a gift from the crew of Apollo 11.

At the end of the tour, you will be introduced to the mausoleum known as the House of Flowers where leader Tito is buried. Thanks, both to the great collection and storytelling, here we will revive the last days of the Former Republic of Yugoslavia.

Hopefully, we will bring you back safely to reality from the time when life was tailored by the size of the ordinary man.

Additional Information

Our comrade and guide will accompany you on a guided walk that reveals the complex era of Serbia from World War II to the 2000s.

The mysteries and tales of urban folklore from the latter half of the 20th century will guide you through the inception and rule of Communism in Yugoslavia. The locations visited will reveal how Communist Yugoslavia was fashioned, the reasons for the compulsory pioneer oath, regulations around the life of an average Yugoslav, and much more.

My Tour of Belgrade - Drazen was an amazing tour guide—a wealth of knowledge about Yugoslavian (and world) history. I am an American high school teacher and I was thinking about how my students would have benefitted from this tour! Excellent!!!

Great guide - wrong title to tour - Our guide - Radica. - was excellent. She spoke so well and knew her stuff!! Just 2 issues - both groups who booked thought it was in English - but apparently it was Spanish. Maybe check your booking site to make it clearer. Also - it’s advertised as Red Belgrade - we were after much more info about communism in Serbia - but this was not the focus at all. You need to change the name or the content.

Fascinating tour understanding Serbia - We were a group of 4 people doing the tour with Marco as our guide. Throughout the tour Marco has demonstrated exceptional knowledge about the history of Yugoslavia and the Balkan area. The general experience was great, Marco knew how to explain difficult and complex topics and was able to make them easier to understand and digest. We asked many questions about life in Serbia and his personal views and insights, Marco answered them with patience and knowledge and helped us understand more about the complicated reality in the Balkan today and in the past. We highly recommend this tour to anyone that would love to understand more about this fascinating area. Thank you Marco, good luck with your next groups!

Very interesting - Very interesting. Nebo was a great guide and had lots of info to share. A lot of the tour was focused on the Yugoslavia Museum and it included a bus ride there as it’s a bit out of the centre — this was really useful as i would have had trouble figuring out on my own how to get there with the bus.

Most enjoyable morning tour - Over the course of a very pleasant morning walk, our tour guide Hristina summarised the complex history of Serbia and the region in sympathetic and intelligent light. She answered all our questions clearly and was also happy to talk our matters of general interest to tourists. We highly recommend the tour and thank Hristina for her generosity.
