  • Mount Sibayak - Mt. Sibayak is a stratovolcano overlooking the town of Berastagi in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Although its last eruption in 1881, geothermal activity in the form of steam vents and hot springs remains high on and around the volcano. The vents produce crystalline sulfur, which was mined on a small scale in the past. Seepage of sulfurous gases has also caused acidic discolouration of the small crater lake.

Totally Worth It - Totally worth it! First, the hike is challenging, but not too difficult. Make sure that you wear good footwear and prepare for them to probably get a bit muddy. At least mine did. It’s 3km to the top and the view is really quite remarkable. But also the journey is quite fun as well. Konong was the best guide. Ask for him if you can. He took some great pics and had a wonderful outgoing personality. Ricky was a great driver too.

Great day at Sibayak and Berastagi - The driver Mike picked us up at the front of our motel in the early morning and expertly drove us to Berastagi in comfort where our guide Argi (sorry probably have spelling wrong) us. They both speak good English. The hike was fantastic, but please don’t forget good walking shoes, head torch, a jacket for the top and a good camera. Views are amazing under the background of the hissing volcano. The hot springs were a great way to relax after the walk and Berastagi fruit and vegetable markets were very good. Highly recommend if you have a spare day in Medan.

Terima Kasih Anggi and Noosan! - Anggi and Noosan are phenomenal guides and we had the best time with them! They were full of knowledge of the local area and answered all our questions, and we even got a peformance of country road on the guitar by Anggi on our way back down! We got to the top in plenty of time for the sunrise (it was freezing - bring warm clothes) had coffee and croissants and had more than enough time at the top to see the sun rise and take in the view. The rest of the day was super great as well - they are very happy to change schedule according to your needs and the driver was very friendly too! Seamless transport from start to finish - loved it!

Success for a first-time hiker - It was a superb experience. My guide was Bangun and the driver was Tico. Tico was on time to pick me up at my hotel in Medan, then we made our 2 hour drive to Berastagi to meet our guide and begin the activities. Bangun was very helpful throughout the hike and friendly too. He was insightful and could answer any questions we asked. He also told us some history of Indonesia. The hike itself is doable for first timers (I was a first time hiker) despite it being challenging initially. Our driver Tico was friendly too and punctual. The activities were well-timed and interesting. Overall a pleasant experience and commendable guide/driver.

Best New Year's Sunrise ever - We had such a brilliant time, could not recommend this tour more. It's an early start but the views and company is so worth it. We did this New Years Day for Sunrise so it was busy and the traffic was a little overwhelming (beyond what you would expect for a place like Medan), but Uncle Mike navigated it perfectly. Our guide Bangun was lovely, knowledge and caring. I truly appreciated this as an unconventional hiker and most people make assumptions on my abilities. But not Bangun, he knew when to help, encourage and to just leave me to my own devices. I cannot stress how amazing this ability is and appreciated. It was amazing to hike up on News Year morning with all the people camping overnight. We got lots of photos with others and felt a little like minor celebrities. If you have been to hot springs in places like New Zealand or Japan, you will find the Sumatra experience a little different. The water is wonderful but it is quite loud with the locals liking their music even early in the morning. Breakfast, coffee and fruit markets were great and I got my favourite, dragon fruit, thanks to Bangun (which needs to be tried in places like Sumatra as in Australia it has no flavour). So 1000% do this tour. Also listen to Hendra. He knows his stuff. You cannot do Lake Toba from Medan in one day (well you can but its a super long day). Stay overnight and truly enjoy the marvels of this place. Let Hendra sort this for you so you don't have to worry about a thing.

Nice trip - it was nice though weather was not good. I could visit mountain with crator, hot spring, and waterfall. you need enough time for congestion.

The fog said that I should come back here again. 😁 - Such a superb fantastic experience when visiting Medan. From this Sunrise Hiking trip with Hendra, I had learnt that people always tell you "There is nothing to do there. Why did you choose to go to that place?" when they see you traveling to their unknown places. However, that question will not be asked if people start discovering until they found that there are things which can be one of the best experience hidden on somewhere on earth for them. For me, this is my first Sunrise Hiking which I had to wake up before 02:00 am to go for a hiking with more than hours for the journey on the road and also for the walks. Many of my friends asked me that why should I pay to be so tired with the activities? But I found that this trip means something to me more than the one who had never tried it think. Until the hike, it was not that hard to walk as I think(with normal health condition). The view on top of the Sibayak Volcano unfortunately was covered by the fog with the wind blowing to let me see the clear views sometimes. A hot coffee is serve with some snacks by Hendra which it was a wow service by him before walking down. Continuing with putting yourself in to a hot spring pool for relaxing and refreshing to boost up your energy again before the breakfast time and then heading to Air Terjun Sipiso Piso Waterfall to complete this magical journey. With well-prepared arrangements and friendly hospitalities from Hendra(the guide) and Mike(the driver), I would like to thank you both of them and state "RECOMMENDED" and "A MUST TO DO” on this Sunrise Hiking Tour which I will be here again and again as the fog said to me. 😉👍🏻🇮🇩❤️👦🏻🗻⛰️🌋

Beautiful sunrise and well-organised trip - We had an amazing trip. Definitely one of the highlights of North-Sumatra, you should make this trip! They picked us up at our hostel right on time and took us for a marvelous trip to see the sunrise at Gunung Sibayak, which we could have never done alone. Afterwards we had the best local fruits and went to see the waterfall, all in al a fantastic experience. It was a long trip though, so make sure to be well-rested.

Horrible experience - DO NOT TRUST THIS TOUR! We booked and paid for a private tour with a 5-8 hour duration as listed in the description. Instead we were put in a 7-person tour; don’t get me wrong, this wouldn’t normally be a problem. But IT IS NOT WHAT WE BOUGHT. Also, since we had to wait for everyone on the trail, we missed the sunrise. The first half of the tour lasted 10 hours (the hike) and to reach the waterfalls we still needed 2 hours of driving + 4 to go back to Medan for a grand total of 18 hours of tour. This is a COMPLETELY different thing.
