Highlights
  • Leilani Estates - During this tour you will be provided with an intimate and unique experience told through the voices and faces of people who lived through and witnessed the 2018 Lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) eruption. This is a unique and one of kind experience that is not available anywhere else. We will drive you to each of the four different properties to explore where you will have the option of taking the guided tour or feel free to walk around on your own. On the guided tour you will have the option of learning about the 2018 eruption, the history of each property and the opportunity to ask questions of the owners who witnessed the eruption first hand. Each property has its own story along with providing special features and views. For example you can walk through a recently active fissure, feel 200 degree steam vents right from the ground and peer down an 80’ fracture in the earth that was recently spewing 2000 degree lava. That’s all just on one property!

The four properties included in this tour are The Canyon, the Cracked Yard and Gardens, the Fissure’s Views and Fissure 9 and the Remnants of a House.

  • Leilani Estates - Cracked Yard and Gardens

This property was going to be the location for Rod to build his dream home on. He spent the past 10 years and countless hours perfecting the property with fruit trees, ornamentals, palms, Hapu’u ferns and anthurium flowers. In addition to all the plants he had made a path through the Ohia trees to where his dream home was going to be built. He brought in over 60 tons of cinder to level his property out to make it the perfect layout.

This property has the perfect balance of old Leilani with the new Leilani. You can see the flowers, fruit trees and green growth and walk the path to what was once going to be his home. That path now has a bridge so that you can cross over one of the larger cracks safely. You can also see the dead trees and the end of fissure 10. The property is no longer level and you can walk over up to 50 foot deep cracks with some as wide as 4 feet. This property has a lot to explore and is very quiet.

  • Leilani Estates - The Fissures’ Views Property

The Fissures’ Views Property aka “Views” has outstanding views of Fissure 1, Fissure 3, Fissure 7, the famous Fissure 8, Fissure 21 and Fissure 22 with the ocean behind it. I have never seen a view of Fissure 22 where you can also see the base of the fissure as well. You walk onto this property from the lava flows edge and follow an established path through the flow field to a point were the lava is about 30′ thick. In addition to the Fissure views listed above you also get an expansive view of the flow field along with steaming vents. On a clear day you can see Mauna Kea in the distance and the telescopes on top.

  • Leilani Estates - F9 and House

This property has the remnants of Heath’s burned down home from the eruption. It is rare to find the remnants of a home from an eruption as they are usually covered over in lava. Walk around a home that burned down with all the owner’s possessions inside. You can see what remains of the children’s bike, their trampoline and several household items. This is the only home that Heath’s children have ever known and they still visit frequently.

On this property, you will get to see and feel the steam vents that are still at 200 degrees. Walk over steaming cracks and the highlight of this particular property is you get to actually walk inside a fissure. You read that correctly, you get to walk inside Fissure 9. At the top you can pier down an 80’ hole that was once spewing 2000 degree lava. There is a perfect photo location inside the fissure and at the top you have a great view of Fissure 8 and the ocean behind it.

  • Leilani Estates - The Canyon

This property has impressive views of Fissure 8. Yes, that Fissure 8. F8 is the one that everyone has heard about and the fissure that ate Puna (that was an intentional play on words). You can take in the majestic views of Fissure 8 along with the lava flow field. You also have views of Fissure 24 and Little 8. There is a Canyon on this property that at one point was over 100’ deep. This canyon ended up saving a few homes and countless properties during the eruption. Pictures do not do this property justice. You have to see it in person to appreciate it. In photos you cannot see the depth and when you show your friends the photos they won’t be able to appreciate it the way you do.

Don't Miss This Tour! - One of the best tours I have ever been on. See and hear the stories of people that lived through this disaster. Experience the up close and personal tour and see Fissure 8 and feel the heat that still permeates from the cracks in the ground. You don't want to miss this. Our guide Rod was friendly and very knowledgeable. This is a tour that you will not be able to find with any other company. Don't MISS IT!

A unique personal Experience - We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the eruption sites and the infamous fissures of Leilani Estates. Our guide, Rod, was friendly and very knowledge about the event and area since he experienced it first hand as a resident of this area. We were able to get up close to several fissures that still emit steam from deep within the earth. I liked that with this tour you are able to get so close and still respect the property and land. I would recommend this tour to anyone who would like a personal and unique experience that you really cannot get with any other company.

Blown away! Better than volcano park! - This experience made our entire trip! We were very humbled to see the 2018 lava flow and the destruction it caused. The tour was VERY educational and allowed us to e first hand the power behind a volcanic eruption. Our two teenagers found this to be incredible to see and touch the lava and to look out at acres of lava fields. We saw steam vents, were told stories to explain the event and what it was like first hand for those who experienced it. We are immensely grateful for the patience, generosity and kindness shown by Heath and Roy during our trip. We also got to see so many interesting fruit trees and plants growing on Roy’s property and he even gave us a few free fruits to take with us. This was by far the best way to really see and comprehend the 2018 eruption, it may not be all of the lava that flowed, but the concentration of fissures and steam vents makes this a very dense tour full of sights to see. Definitely wear sunblock, don’t forget to coat your legs as the sun reflects back into your skin over the lava. The guys had water for us and even a few snacks to keep us energized for the tour. They even allowed some of our party to ride in their vehicle to the properties to allow more visibility and the chance to get more information on the drive in. Our buddy accidentally left his car keys in that vehicle after being dropped back off and we had to call Heath to come back and bring the keys to us, which he did without an inkling of hesitation. Just really kind people, I can’t recommend this enough!

This is a Must-See! Exceptional Tour - Rod and Heath are wonderful narrators. Their experiences and bond of a friendship created from a neighborly call to help. It's truly a tour to book. They are open and friendly. It was a true pleasure meeting them both. 2018 Eruption and aftermath is amazing to view. Up close and insightful. This tour gives you the full perspective and impact. We had toured Kazumura cave prior this tour and learned both under ground lava impact, and then came to this tour which gave us above ground perspective. WOW, oh Wow. Loved meeting both of these guys. Rod and his landscaped gorgeous gardens, and Heath with the loss of his family home plus surrounding volcanic landscape. There are currently blowing steam vents everywhere. We will go back and check out the latest. They have a bridge under way to cross over the volcanic valley. If you're reading this... book it and go see. This is your tour.

The REAL Fissure 8 Tour - Okay folks, this is the real fissure 8 tour! Heath & Rod are the true landowners in the fissure 8 area, all other “tours” offered are trespassing. This is the most informative, and interesting tour we’ve been on. Not only are you walking into fissure 9 and 24 but you’re being guided by two of the homeowners that lived through the eruption. The lava is amazing to see and there is still steam and “hot” spots coming from the ground. Their story is sad to hear but they have channeled their experience into a positive and informative tour that gives back to the community. If you want to see lava, this is the tour to take! We highly recommend!

Incredibly unique - Incredibly unique experience. We got to see multiple fissures from the 2018 eruption and also learn about how events transpired and how the lavas impacted people's lives. It was an incredibly somber and special experience. You also get some very close up views of fissures and actually get to stand inside of a few of them. Amazing experience and Rod was a great guide.

Unique experience at a recent eruption site - Rod gave us an amazing tour of several of the 2018 eruption vents at their properties. This is a unique experience. Nowhere else can one experience the devastating beauty of a natural phenomenon like this recent eruption and at the same time get to share for a moment the togertheness of this tight community and what they went through. The sites are stunning, riveting.

Fissure 8 and 9 sneak peak - We had a sneak peek of this tour when it was not in normal operation. Excellent views of lava flows, fissures and fissure 8 cinder cone. Moving stories of the residents' experiences during the 2018 eruption which showcased the best and worst of humanity.

See the infamous Fissure 8 and the Lower East Rift Zone with first-hand survivors - We had been wanting to see Fissure 8 and visit the communities devastated by Kilauea's 2018 eruption, but everything is on private land. When we searched for options, we found LERZ4 Tours. Immediately, we appreciated how respectful they are of the neighborhood, as Heath and Rob are owners in Leilani Estates. Unlike some other tour operators, there is no trespassing on private property. Heath showed us Fissure 9 that opened up in his backyard, and the remnants of his home. They also have a heart to give back to the community (some proceeds are donated back to those who lost everything in the eruption). Heath and Rob were so thoughtful and professional in structuring their tour. So much work and attention went into making this as safe as possible for everyone... with bridges, guard rails, and gravel paths across the lava. What you can see on this tour of the Lower East Rift Zone (LERZ): views of the infamous Fissure 8 (with a giant chasm that opened up in front of it) along with 'mini-8' that is still steaming. Multiple other named and unnamed fissures. Walk across hot steam vents. See the remnants of Heath's home with 'lava bombs.' Enjoy the beauty of Rob's gardens, filled with colorful flowers and exotic fruits. We truly appreciated the time and stories that Heath and Rob shared with us, and will never forget this experience. They even gave us some great tips for lunch, and for visiting the Big Island's newest black sand beach. Although there is no active lava flowing currently, we were so happy that we took this tour. Highly recommend.
