Highlights
  • Coconut Island - Coconut Island, also known as Moku Ola, which literally means “island of life” in the Hawaiian language, used to be a site of an ancient temple dedicated to healing. During the olden times, the island’s spring waters were known to cure all sorts of ailments. The island is also known as a place of refuge for ancient Hawaiians who broke the law. All they have to do was swim to the island without getting caught by the warriors chasing them then they will be pardoned for whatever crime they had committed.
  • Liliuokalani Gardens - Resting along Banyan Drive, in historic downtown Hilo, you will find the beautiful Lili’uokalani Gardens, the largest, authentic Edo-style ornamental garden outside of Japan. Queen Liliuokalani, donated the original five acres of land to create a public park in 1907. This was increased to seventeen acres by the Legislative Committee concerned with management of public lands in November 1917. Named for Hawaii’s last ruling monarch, Queen Lili’uokalani, the garden opened in 1919 and was styled as a tribute to the first Japanese immigrants to the Big Island who helped build it’s agricultural history starting in 1868.

Beautiful, Friendly and Fun! - We booked a 7 AM kayaking tour and went out on the water with Adam and 3 other guests. We met at the store and drove down the street together to the waterfront, where Adam unloaded and set up the one-person kayaks. One member of our group hadn't every kayaked before, and Adam was helpful in teaching him how to navigate the boat. We paddled around a small peninsula, about three quarters of a mile, and stopped at Coconut Island, where we got out to have some water and snacks. There is an old Navy diving platform on Coconut Island, and Adam helped those of us who wanted to jump to get up to the top. The trip there and back was very relaxing. Everyone moved at a relaxed pace and enjoyed the beautiful scenery around us featuring views of the open ocean, early morning sun through clouds, and a unobstructed view of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Adam was friendly and had great stories about life on the island, and was very attentive, checking in on guests in groups to make sure everyone was having a good time. This was a beautiful way to start the day!

Exceptional Kayaking trip. - This was a great experience! As one might expect in Hilo, it rained. It did not damper our experience. Devon was an excellent guide, attentive to the varying levels of kayaking experience of the group. He made everyone feel welcomed, had a wealth of knowledge of the area and its history, and a great sense of humor. Be prepared to kayak in different weather conditions, this Hilo but it is well worth it. We had a great time!

Fantastic paddling experience! - Fantastic kayak experience with Adam! Easy pick up and getting to the park. We enjoyed an easy paddle along the coast and into the ice pool area where we saw turtles and fish and birds. There were snacks and drinks if we wanted and lovely conversation. Would definitely recommend-rain or shine!

Beautiful Hilo day with great setup & staff made for a fun experience - Great little excursion in Reed's Bay & around Coconut Island. Staff was helpful, full of aloha... our guide Morgan was attentive & had a great attitude. He showed us (beginners) some tips & was full of info, insights, & patience during our kayak outing. Ocean was a bit choppy that day, making for slow going at first, but we felt safe & had a great time. Mahalo!

Coconut Island Fun - The kayak adventure was challenging enough for our experienced kayakers but easy enough for our newbies. Adam, our guide, was knowledgeable, patient, and had a great sense of humor. He shared great historical information with the adults and kept the kids entertained. We also appreciated his local information for things to do and see, and places to eat. We will definitely use Hilo Ocean Adventures again.

Flexible place - We were late getting there and they were very flexible about it. Our guide Adam was nice and knowledgeable but it didn’t allow time to kayak to coconut island or see the waterfalls.

Skip this one - With all the choices of activities I would skip this one. There was no instruction which was fine for those of us who were experienced but there were people who’d never kayaked and it was painful for them and painful to watch. We had to wheel our kayaks to and from the drop point and it was not “just across the street. The guide was a nice guy but offered little beyond answering questions. There was no “longest River”.
