Embark on a small-group snorkel experience from Kailua-Kona to Kealakekua Bay. Discover Hawaiian history, encounter spinner dolphins, and explore the Captain James Cook monument.

Duration: 3 hours
Cancellation: 1 day learn more
Highlights
  • Kealakekua Bay - Snorkel at Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park, the site of the Captain Cook Monument on The Big Island of Hawaii, in a small-group experience.

Kealakekua Bay is a protected marine sanctuary, boasting arguably the best snorkeling in the entire state of Hawaii. Due to the state’s environmental protections, Kealakekua Bay boasts an abundance of marine life that includes Nai’a (Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins), Caluiflower Coral, Yellow Tang fish, pencil urchin, and dozens of other marine species that call the bay home.

Your tour will include a maximim of 12 passengers, which is a more private experience than the “cattle boats” in Kona that carry 100 passengers or more. By being part of a smaller group, it’s quicker for the group to enter and exit the boat, which allows for more time snorkeling on the beautiful coral reef.

On our way to and from Kealakekua Bay, our Captain and crew will point out historically and culturally significant areas of the Kona coast. We often see Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins, and humpback whales (during the winter) on this tour!

Additional Information

We embark on a journey from Keauhou Harbor into the pristine azure seas. As we set sail, our crew highlights captivating sights along the historically rich Kona coastline. South Kona is home to an array of significant Hawaiian Heritage landmarks, brimming with mana (spiritual power). We remain in proximity to the Kona coast as we navigate southwards towards Kealakekua Bay, keeping a keen eye on noteworthy marine creatures.

We might pause to marvel at the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins (Stenella longirostris) performing. These dolphins tend to rest near the shore during the day, and occasionally engage with the boat, surfing our bow wave and frolicking in our wake.

After a swift display by the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins, Humpback whales, and other fascinating features we come across en route, we reach the globally renowned Kealakekua Bay, the location of Captain James Cook’s monument.

Following an hour and a half of snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay, we begin our return to the harbor.

Great snorkelling! - Great snorkel trip with a small group! One of the best snorkelling trips we have done so far while in Hawaii. Well organized and ample time to snorkel by the Captain Cook monument. Got to see some dolphins, an eel and many, beautiful tropical fish. A perfect half day tour.

A must do - Amazing views of the island on the way to the snorkeling cove. Crew were very knowledgeable about the island and sea life. The Captain Cook memorial was close enough for good photos.

Unforgettable Underwater Adventure - It was an absolutely fantastic experience! Unlike anything we have ever encountered! The reef was teeming with colorful fish - it felt like swimming in a giant aquarium. We even met Nemo and Dory :-) On the way back to the harbor, the captain suddenly stopped the boat because he had spotted something in the water. It was a large manta ray!! So we all jumped back in - including the captain (!) - and had an amazing swim with this fascinating creature!! The captain and snorkeling instructor made this an incredible, fun, and safe experience. THANK YOU!! We highly recommend this trip to anyone visiting Big Island! <3

Awesome snorkeling trip - Great trip! Knowledgeable guides who were able to find dolphins ahead of our snorkeling excursion. The boat itslef isn't fancy, but I much prefer the small size over the larger boats with hoards of people. Good snorkeling with lots of fish.

Perfect - The small group snorkel tour was perfect. The captain & Jayna were super friendly and great to hang out with. They brought us to the bay at a great time of day and gave us instructions and helpful tips. They handed us foam pool noodles, which my husband and I both liked using. Snacks and drinks plus the fresh pineapple on the way back and ended the day perfectly. Very glad I wasn’t tempted by the big boat tour!
