  • Le Lac Balea - Balea Lac is a natural glacier lake at 2040m, 360 meters long, 240 meters wide and 11 meters deep.
  • Fagaras Mountains - It is said that the name “Fagaras” is coming from the word “fagar”, an old word which represents a large old beech forest.

In ancient times, the bottom part of the Fagaras Mounatins were covered with Oak forest. Now remains “Dumbrava Vadului”, where, among the oak trees, we have daffodils (Narcissus stellaris), locally known as coprine.

In Fagaras Mountains there is “Mioarelor” galcial lake (2282 m), the highest glacial lake in the Carpathian mountains.

In Fagaras Mountains there are 8 of the 14 peaks of the Carpathian mountains that reach the altitude of 2500 m: Moldoveanu (2544 m), Negoiu (2535 m), Coltul Vistei Mari (2527 m), Lespezi (2522 m), Cornu Caltunului (2510 m), Vanatoarea lui Buteanu (2507 m), Hartopu (2506 m) and Dara (2500 m). Here there are over 42 peaks with altitude between 2400 and 2500 m.

  • Vidraru Dam - It was completed in 1966 on the Argeè River and creates Lake Vidraru. The arch dam was built with the primary purpose to produce hydroelectricity. The dam’s height is 166 meters, the arch length 305 meters and it can store 465 million cubic meters of water. The reservoir has a total shoreline (perimeter) length of 28 km.

Fantastic tour in Transfagarasan! - The tour hosted by Charlie was absolutely amazing! He is a very experienced and friendly guide for the spots we visited and we feel very safe to ride with him. Charlie speaks very well English although we try to speak some basic greetings in Romanian. He is a very fun guy and we really like chatting with him en route. We saw bears along the highway that we all very excited but please remember to respect the nature and wildlife by not feeding and disturbing them. I give it 10/10 if I have to rate the whole trip.

Transfagarasan Tour with Guide Dan - The guide Dan of 10, we did not understand English at all (we already knew it was in English) our guide spoke to us in Spanish, he explained everything to us and the questions we asked him. Thank you Dan for making us spend an unforgettable day (100X100 I recommend taking the excursion. Just commenting (although it is not the topic of the excursion) that I have never seen a country that has so many abandoned dogs, it is a shame to see them.

Fantastic Scenery - We had a great day exploring the Transfagarasan Highway with Tibby. It is quite a long day but totally worth it to see the highway and Balea Lake. There were lots of opportunities to stop for photos and enjoy the wonderful scenery. We also stopped at a dam and even saw some bears at the side of the road! This was a special extra treat as obviously not part of the planned tour. We passed the fortress but it was closed so we didn't go up. But we stopped at the bottom of Bran Castle and learnt a bit about the history. We also enjoyed seeing a lot of life in rural Romania as we passed through the countryside. We had a few stops for refreshments along the way and we enjoyed some traditional food for lunch at a buffet style restaurant recommended by Tibby. Tibby was a very safe driver (needed to be on all those hairpin bends) and always ensured we made the most of the day. Thank you Tibby for a great day!

The most beautiful day out! - The Transfagarasean Road really lives up to expectations, and was one of the most stunning things we got to do on our visit to Romania! Our guide Zsort really went above and beyond, he was friendly and professional with lots of facts and let us stop in lots of places for pictures. Not only this but at a couple of other stops on the tour that required payment for entry in cash, and we realised we didn’t have enough, he paid for us and let us pay him back! Every stop on the tour was a delight and getting to see 8 bears (including four cubs) was a highlight. Would definitely reccommend!

The Ultimate Transylvanian Road Trip - We saw all the things we wanted to see in one excursion: the most beautiful scenery, bears, and Vlad’s real castle (from a distance because the castle was closed because of renovations). Our guide Dan was on time, professional, and knew a lot about the area.

A pleasant experience overall - Our guide Dan was pleasant and very kind. He drove us to all the locations and kept us entertained throughout the way. We went up the cable car since the Transfagarasen was closed. We were lucky with the weather and the views were amazing. He sang Ave Maria for us inside the Cistercian abbey which was a pleasant surprise. He gave us woollens and hot coffee to keep as warm which were nice gestures that I appreciate. We would have preferred a bit more information on certain exhibits but overall it was a nice experience.

Loved it - I am a happy bear - Okay, I must admit that the weather played a major role on this particular trip as Transfagarasan usually shuts from November 1 if it snows...I was lucky it did not and on 9th November 2022, it was shining as bright as any summer day. What made my day trip even more special was my guide Charlie who is really knowledgable and a genuinely friendly and caring person. We did the entire circuit and he left no stone unturned to help me make the most out of the day. We stopped as many times i wanted for photos and videos and he even suggested we take the longer route and do the entire circuit in search of brown bears in the forest. At no point, it felt like i was with a stranger in a car but with a friend who genuinely wanted to share the beauty and the wonders of his country with me. The highlight of our trip was that we did see a baby brown bear, right next to our car. I was on top of the world and happy to go back with so many beautiful memories. Thank you Charlie for making my day so special. And like i promised, i will come back once more during summers along with my wife and would like to book the same trip to get a different experience of Transfagarsanian summers.
