Highlights

Itinerary: Bucharest – Curtea de Arges Monastery - Poienari Fortress aka The real castle of Dracula – Vidraru Dam - Transfagarasan Road – Balea Lake - Bucharest

Curtea de Arges Monastery: Located at the end of a boulevard with hundred of years old linden trees, this 16th century monastery is the most important pilgrimage and prayer place in Arges County. The unique building resembles a very large and elaborate mausoleum, built in Byzantine style with Moorish arabesques. The church also serves as resting place for the kings and queens of Romania.

Poienari Fortress - The Real Castle of Dracula: Is placed on the highest cliff around Arges river gorges at 850m (2800 feet), surrounded by a magnificent landscape and to get here you will climb 1480 steps. The first documents mentioning Poienari Fortress are from the 14th century when here was only a surveillance tower, this until Vlad decided to rebuilt it and use it as his main stronghold.

Vidraru Dam: along Transfagarasan Road, at about 40 kilometers far from Curtea de Arges, Vidraru Dam is considered by specialists a real jewelry of engineering. At the completion date, it ranked 5th in Europe, and 9th in the world. As specialists say, it is a double curved dam, its height is 166 meters and arch length 307 meters. Its outline is electrically lighted by night, so it can be noticed from the plane. Tourists can climb to Belvedere platform to admire the beautiful landscape.

Transfagarasan Road: Drive on the most famous and most windy European road. First stop will be at Vidraru Dam, built during the communist period, together with the road. You will have the chance to take photos of this splendid landscape. Driving to the mountain top, the landscape becomes more and more spectacular. After passing by beautiful waterfalls, we will go through the longest tunnel in Romania, for almost 1 km, reaching Balea glacier Lake. Brief stop for photos. On the other side of the mountain the drive will be even more impressive.

Balea Lake: is a glacier lake situated at 2,034 meters of altitude in the Fagaras Mountains, in central area of Romania. It is one of the most visited lakes in Romania. The lake is accessible by car on the Transfagarasan road during the summer, and the rest of the year by cable car.

Scenic drive on an Autumn day! - Whether you are looking to learn a little about Romania or get some great photos for your Instagram (or both, in my case!) - this tour is a great pick. Too many photos to upload! What a great day tour to get out of our hotel in Bucharest and see some sights. Our tour guide (Aiden) was awesome and very informative about all things related to Romania. I was so excited to see several bears on the road amongst the fall-foliage! Also was able to stop at a neat monastery along the way and see how people in smaller towns live compared to Bucharest. I found this tour with a guide to be worth it since we were able to relax and power-nap in the backseat after a long day. Renting a car would have been entirely too much hassle. Save yourself the time and exhaustion and go with Aiden, instead. You’ll be in good hands, have someone to take you and your friend’s/family photos and feel like you made a new friend!

Highlight of my vacation - This was an incredible tour. Our tour guide Claudiu was very knowleablge, friendly, and attentive. My mom and I were feeling a bit under the weather but Claudiu made sure we felt comfortable on the long drive. The views were amazing with lots of photo opportunities. I would highly recommend this tour !

Spectacular views - Cristian was an fabulous guide, so knowledgeable and an excellent driver. We visited the monastery in Sinaia before getting to the highway. We were unable to visit the Fortress due to bear activity which was a shame, and alas no bears were spotted in the forest- though one had smashed up one of the food sellers huts the previous night up at the lake. The highway was a series of hairpin bends, through trees with glorious autumn colours. We stopped at the Dam when it began to snow! It gradually got colder as we travelled upwards, and there was a lot of fog. It cleared once we were through the 1km tunnel to the lake, and the snow had settled.

Talk to your tour guides ahead of time! - Unfortunately the company that we booked through had gone out of business and Viator was unaware. The tour did not happen for us and it was too late after waiting to see if they would arrive and talking with Viator to get another trip anywhere outside of Bucharest that day. It was the only day we had available for a long day excursion so we were not able to leave Bucharest. I would recommend the tour but contact the vendor that is hosting your tour ahead to confirm that they have your reservation and that you speak to them prior to your arrival. We were very disappointed to not get to go. We were refunded but lost out on an amazing experience. Additionally, many hotels offer tours to Transfagarasan Road and these can be arranged through your hotel for around the same prices listed here. I have used Viator in several countries and never had a problem before but this has been a very dissapponting experience this time.

Dangerous driver put our lives at risk! - Driver was driving very dangerous, at times doing 100mph. He swerved in and out of lanes, overtook on bends and without a doubt put our lives in danger. He broke numerous traffic rules including playing with his phone on Facebook, texting and looking through photos numerous times. He even took both hands off the steering wheel and had to swerve to prevent crashing. He may be an experienced driver but his luck will run out. Make sure you’re not with him when this happens! He was also unprofessional as he spoke for the entire trip about his personal problems and sex life! Bearing in mind we are 4 woman travelling together, we felt this was very inappropriate. Much as we felt sorry for him, this was our holiday and we ended up providing therapy sessions and being concerned about his welfare far more than enjoying the tour. The Transfagarason Highway is well worth a visit but not with this tour company.
