Highlights
  • Lupa Capitolina Monument - Immerse yourself in local history by exploring the area around our meeting point – the Lupa Capitolina Monument.
  • Biserica Sfantul Gheorghe Nou - Next, we’ll head to the Tram Station, located right in front of New St. George’s Church, consecrated in 1707 and considered a marvel of its time. A 15-minute tram ride will take us along Mosilor Avenue, which divides the Jewish quarter from the Armenian quarter and then introduces us to communist architecture.
  • Piata Obor Bucuresti - Obor Market – one of Romania’s largest and oldest traditional markets, existing in various forms for over 300 years. If you’re interested in Romanian food and culture, Obor Market is a fascinating place to start. Here, you can find everything from cheese and meat products, numerous types of honey, fresh fruits and vegetables to sauerkraut, spices, and handcrafted wooden bowls sold at market stalls and small shops spread over approximately 26,000 square meters. A well-known terrace selling “mititei” (traditional Romanian grilled ground meat rolls) and cold beer is our next great spot for an indulgent stop, as well as for mingling with the locals.
  • Universitate - After this authentic experience, we’ll hop on a trolleybus and head back along Mosilor Street and Carol I Boulevard to another historically rich area – University Square. As we walk, we will see and learn about the most important historical landmarks located between University Square and Cismigiu Park.
  • Cismigiu Parc - As the saying goes, there is no better way to bring people together than with desserts. So, our indulgent tour will end at a fine traditional restaurant where we’ll enjoy sweet Wallachian doughnuts called Papanasi, served hot, filled with jam, and topped with delicious sour cream. What a way to ensure you leave Bucharest with sweet memories!

Additional Information

The Unhealthy Food Tour marvelously interweaves the old with the new, combining food and drinks with historical and architectural insights. It kicks off with a classic communist-era snack - the Romanian Pretzel paired with Sana Yoghurt.
A 15-minute tram ride later, we reach Obor Market, one of Romania’s largest and most established traditional markets dating back over three centuries. This bustling market occupies roughly 26,000 square meters and offers a wide range of products, including cheese, meats, spices, and handmade wooden items, available at various market stalls and tiny stores. We’ll then visit a popular terrace known for its “mititei” and refreshing beer – an indulgent stop on our tour. Following this genuine experience, we’ll board a trolleybus to explore another historically rich area located between University Square and Cismigiu Park.
The tour concludes at a chic yet traditional restaurant (primarily Caru cu bere), where we’ll savour delectable Wallachian doughnuts, known as Papanasi. They are served warm, filled with jam, and topped with a scrumptious dollop of sour cream.

Great food, great insights, come hungry! - We had a great time exploring the city and food market with our guide Horia, learning about Bucharest (and Romania) past and present. The man is a wealth of knowledge! Come hungry and forget about your diet because the food is plentiful and tasty. Highly recommended.

Awesome and would suggest a great way to learn about the city - Stefania was a very knowledgeable tour guide. She gave a great history of the city as we toured around the market area and ate some great foods (unhealthy for sure). We loved the Meech and the wild fried donut desert!

Great tour - I wish we'd have done the tour earlier in our stay since we had tried some of the foods already. However, it was still a great tour. But a word to the wise. At the end of the tour, if you are a couple, SPLIT the order of papanashi. There are two and I don't think anybody could eat two of those things.
